Love the story, but could not get to the end.
Revisado: 04-21-14
I usually like Ian Rankin very much, he is on of my 5 preferred authors. Yet I could not get to the end this time.
I do not want anyone to think this is a critic of the book, not at all.
But I am from Denmark, so English is a second language to me. This gave me a lot of problems because of this audiobooks narration. It is, from my point of view read in heavily dialected English, and that broke my back.
I think this book should be narrated by another, someone with a more neutral English.

Historia
On May 18, 1860, William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Abraham Lincoln waited in their hometowns for the results from the Republican National Convention in Chicago. When Lincoln emerged as the victor, his rivals were dismayed and angry. Throughout the turbulent 1850s, each had energetically sought the presidency as the conflict over slavery was leading inexorably to secession and civil war.

A great man, despite being an American
Revisado: 03-04-13
As the title indicates, I am not an American. That is why my knowledge of Lincoln was severly limited. Had it not been for the film, I would never have read this book. I never heard of his rivals, seen the memorial.
But even for a European from a small nation, this book proved to be exiting and the carecters captivating. Getting the feeling for theese men, from childhood and forward, was a great help for someone like me. That it is written in an exiting way, helps one get through, the less interestining pages. Surely a captivating book. That we get to Americas crossroad in this book, is of course a help. Unfortainly a president at time of war is quite exiting to read about. Truelly a great book, with descriptions of the people around Lincoln, with great deccriptions. Sometimes names get a little confused, for me, but as a rule, you get the picture very well.
If only politicians, yours and ours would be more like Lincoln, the world would be a better place.
It is said that democracy is based of collected wills. I disagrees. In a true crisis, it is importened to have a leader rise above the rest, taking charge. Making sure internal struggle does not rip us apart. Lincoln was such a man. A good man, in difficult times, raising above petty party politics to lead the country through the struggle.

Lee has made this daring and massive move with seventy thousand men in a determined effort to draw out the Union Army of the Potomac and mortally wound it. His right hand is General James Longstreet, a brooding man who is loyal to Lee but stubbornly argues against his plan. Opposing them is an unknown factor: General George Meade, who has taken command of the Army only two days before what will be perhaps the crucial battle of the Civil War.

Book that teaches history, at its best
Revisado: 03-04-13
This book opened my eyes to the world of historical fiction. It is a splendid work. The authors engagement in this book is clearly seen. It tells the story of Gettysburg in an exiting way, by telling through the voices of generals on both rides. You get a sence of their personality, their doubts, fears and determination. It is easey to see the battle in front of you, raging on the field. Only problem, it is to short. Sadly this audiobook does not show the maps the books contain, so I bought the book as well. A good buy if you like history.

Good book, poor reading
Revisado: 01-27-12
Would you consider the audio edition of The Black Book to be better than the print version?
I think it is a great book, and I like Ian Rankin very much. Bit the narrator has a very clear accent, so if you a not scottish, it can be hard to understand the narration at times.

Fast paced action
Revisado: 06-20-11
This book is about a a young boys determination to be the best. No that is actually incorrect, as he learns, it is about being the best you can be. That it is set in a futuristic racing world, makes it fast and exiting. But it would have been just as good with ordinary racing. It is a story we all can relate to, because we all want to do our best. It is about that winning is only importuned if you win with honor and dignity. The honest boy in a world of intolerance, envy and jealousy. Truly a good story to be read. That the action is well described to makes this a great book. I am sorry that the books illustrations are not included, so I am thinking of buying the real book to.

How can he keep it up
Revisado: 06-07-11
This book is an exiting "conclusion" of Jeff Shaara's World War 2 trilogy, making it, in fact, a quadrilogy. Just as exiting and horrifying as his other books, this tells a story of a different kind of war then the trilogy. The japanese are fare more death-defying then the germans, so the battle in the pacific are so much more brutal and terrifying, then in Europe. Seeing women sacrificing their lives to kill the marines, suicide-attacks and other horrible tactics, truly is different then the other books. It is told, all to well. A masterpiece of authorship by the greatest author in this genre. Read it. The best author in the world has done it again. Michael Shaara would be proud of his son.
