Dalinar Kholin challenged the evil god Odium to a contest of champions with the future of Roshar on the line. The Knights Radiant have only ten days to prepare—and the sudden ascension of the crafty and ruthless Taravangian to take Odium’s place has thrown everything into disarray. Desperate fighting continues simultaneously worldwide—Adolin in Azir, Sigzil and Venli at the Shattered Plains, and Jasnah in Thaylenah. The former assassin, Szeth, must cleanse his homeland of Shinovar from the dark influence of the Unmade.

Don’t underestimate therapy
Revisado: 01-13-25
Just more great stuff from Brandon. Not saying there aren’t issues with the story, but so many things none of us saw coming. Wish there were more content for a number of characters. But, Storms, I can’t wait for the next installment…

Historia
Acclaimed actress Claire Danes burnishes an epic story of heroes, gods, and monsters in a groundbreaking translation of The Odyssey, the first great adventure story in the Western literary tradition. When the wily warrior-king Odysseus sets off for home after the Trojan War, he doesn’t realize this simple undertaking will become a perilous journey of 10 years. Beset at every turn, he encounters obstacles, detours, and temptations—both supernatural and human—while his wife Penelope fends off would-be suitors desperate to take the throne.

A little disappointing to me
Revisado: 03-23-24
Danes’ reading is really mediocre and does the material no favors. But also the more I reread Greek mythology the less impressed I am. It is pretty impossible for me to stomach the inherent misogyny of the ancient Greeks. And that may also be why I have found Madeline Miller and Natalie Haynes to be a breath of fresh air in a stuffy world of classics.

Historia
Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

Slow burn, but amazing payoff
Revisado: 02-20-24
A truly incredible journey…I wasn’t sure how much I was liking it for about half the book, unsure what exactly was going on…
But the performance of the reader is comforting and beautiful. And while the suspension of needing to know what is happening is not easy, the payoff is worth it.
I am surprised by the power of my emotional response to the reveal near the end and how deeply Clarke’s process affected me.

Historia
Recipient of the 1966 Tanizaki Prize, it has been called Endo's supreme achievement" and "one of the twentieth century's finest novels". Considered controversial ever since its first publication, it tackles the thorniest religious issues of belief and faith head on. A novel of historical fiction, it is the story of a Jesuit missionary sent to seventeenth century Japan, who endured persecution that followed the defeat of the Shimabara Rebellion.

Painfully tedious
Revisado: 12-29-23
Hated this. About halfway, I had to speed it up to help alleviate the torture. Was part of the intent of this book to make us suffer like the Japanese Christians?
Obviously there are interesting philosophical discussions that can come from this, but it doesn’t make a good novel. I am surprised that it is such a well regarded work.

Beautiful prose!
Revisado: 12-22-23
I will echo the sentiment of some reviews that suggest this book might be a better read than listen. The writing is gorgeous and feels as if it were written in 1799. There are a great many characters with names unfamiliar to an English listener, which made listening rather confusing at times. I’m still not sure if I know the actual point of the story outside of it being a beautiful love story and period piece.
That said, it was thoughtful and beautiful. And I feel a better person for listening. It was so well written that I will definitely read more Mitchell!

Loved the ending! It was not thrilling listening to the first two thirds, though I stayed engaged and curious. Very good, if not great overall, but it is really worth it to stay till the beautiful end!

Historia
The inhabitants of a small town have long found that their lives intersect at one focal point: the local shopping mall. But business is down, stores are closing, and as the institution breathes its last gasp, the people inside it dream of something different, something more. A keenly perceptive and deeply humane portrait of a community in transition, ultimately illuminating the magical connections that can bloom from the ordinary wonder of our everyday lives, You Are Here brings this diverse group of characters vividly to life.

A sweet and thoughtful story that touches on many timely topics. It wrestles with our prejudices and judgements toward ourselves as much as toward others. A truly rewarding listen!

Historia
It's been 18 months since the Raxter School for Girls was put under quarantine, since the Tox hit and pulled Hetty's life out from under her. It started slow. First the teachers died, one by one. Then it began to infect the students, turning their bodies strange and foreign. Now, left to fend for themselves on their island home, the girls don't dare wander outside the school's fence, where the Tox has made the woods wild and dangerous. They wait for the cure they were promised as the Tox seeps into everything. But when Byatt goes missing, Hetty will do anything to find her.

Wanted to like it…
Revisado: 04-06-23
Terrible undeveloped story and undeveloped characters in a plot that goes nowhere. There must be a sequel in mind, because it doesn’t seem to have a point by itself.
Also, the queer storyline was underwhelming, though kudos for a story that can have queer characters yet not make a big deal about it.

Revisado: 02-03-23
Completely satisfying end to era 2! So much connection to the rest of the Cosmere…and as much of an ending, it is also an important cog in the machine of the Cosmere. That said, TLM is pure entertainment, a roller coaster of emotions and excitement!

Historia
With The Alloy of Law, Brandon Sanderson surprised listeners with a New York Times best-selling spinoff of his Mistborn audiobooks, set after the action of the trilogy, in a period corresponding to late 19th-century America. The trilogy's heroes are now figures of myth and legend, even objects of religious veneration. They are succeeded by wonderful new characters, chief among them Waxillium Ladrian, known as Wax, hereditary lord of House Ladrian.

Another great Cosmere novel…
Revisado: 01-03-23
Even better in a second listen. Sanderson plant’s see many Easter eggs and clues to later Cosmere novels that multiple listens and reads only add to the whole experience. This one isn’t the best of his novels, but it is still great and a fulfilling listen.
