This is the dumbest thriller I have ever read or listened to. Just ridiculous. But the narration was excellent, so it wasn’t a total loss.

Reads like bad fan fiction written by a teen girl for an audience of preteen girls.

This is the best book I have read so far this year. I toggled back and forth between the hardcover and the audiobook because I could not get enough of this all-consuming, beautifully written novel. Edoardo Ballerini is a fantastic narrator.

This is a poorly written novel about a very important and relevant topic. Disappointing. The audible narrator was dreadful which certainly didn’t help matters.

Uneven but Funny Comedy Memoir

3.5 Stars. I liked this book a lot but I didn't love it. Usually, I find that comedians do a great job of narrating their own audiobooks -- I mean, they are seasoned stage orators -- but in this case, Ali came off pretty stiff in her delivery. I think she's one of those stand-up comedians who is a magnetic stage performer but a meh reader. Anyway, there was a lot of hilarious material in here and as a woman and a mom I related to and found great humor in a lot of her vignettes. I know she is known for being raunchy, but I do think if you say the same dirty words over and over and over again, they lose their emotional impact, and what starts off hilariously shocking can become repetitive and even boring. But overall, I really enjoyed it. It was a really easy book to listen to while I was getting things done around my house, and that is exactly what I like humor memoirs for.

This is the 4th Fredrik Backman novel I’ve listened to on Audible in about the past 15 months. I never would’ve suspected that I would find stories about quirky Swedish people and sports teams to be so charming, but I apparently I do. Beartown remains my favorite of the Backman books I’ve read but I really did enjoy this one, too. I found Britt-Marie a difficult heroine to embrace at first, but I am glad I stuck with her despite how annoying she could be, especially in those first few chapters. I’m not going to forget her anytime soon. Also, I won’t forget Joan Walker’s absolutely excellent narration. This was such a pleasure to listen to!

This moving, timely story brings to life many of the complexities of the issue of racism in modern day America. The main characters are well developed and the plot is engaging and exciting. Bahni Turpin’s narration is stellar. A captivating listen.

I grew up admiring Demi Moore. I loved her raspy voice. I envied her beauty, sex appeal and self-confidence. I saw nearly all of her movies, I followed stories about her in magazines, and I was always definitely a fan. From my point of view, she seemed to have an enviable, charmed life. But the tabloids did repeatedly expose a darker, sadder side to her life, so when I heard about this memoir, I couldn’t wait to listen to her tell her own story in her own voice on Audible. It is an engaging story — a mixture of heartbreaking family dysfunction, tantalizing Hollywood remembrances, addiction and recovery, love and loss, self-reflection and self-discovery. She’s an interesting, likable woman with a truly singular and interesting life. I really enjoyed her memoir.

I have been meaning to listen to this for quite awhile, and was finally spurred into action when my son was struggling with reading it for summer reading for school. I don’t know why I was so surprised that I found it so riveting, so impossible to stop thinking about. I felt like I already knew so much about the story from what I knew of the television series that I thought I would somehow find the book tedious. I couldn’t have been more wrong. This is such a gorgeously written novel, so well-paced, and so captivatingly laid out. Claire Danes is an engaging, nuanced narrator. I am sorry to be done with it and I highly recommend.

Lopsided story but compelling narration

There is so much to like — and so much not to like — about this novel. The first half or so, set in the New York theatre district in the early 1940s, is absolutely delightful. The descriptions of the characters, the fashion, the nightlife, the scenery, etc are so engaging and funny and colorful. But from the moment Vivian Morris returns to her childhood home in upstate New York, the energy of the story is just drained out and what had been a lively and interesting story just falls limp. I forced myself to get to the end of the story and the only thing that kept me interested was Blair Brown’s excellent narration. Disappointing. And Gilbert’s use of the literary device where the entire novel was a letter to her gentlemen friend’s daughter was tiresome, ridiculous snd unnecessary. This book really needed a heavy hand by a good editor. It could’ve been so much better.
