Historia
Opal is a lot of things—orphan, high school dropout, full-time cynic and part-time cashier—but above all, she's a determined to find a better life for her younger brother Jasper. One that gets them out of Eden, Kentucky, a town remarkable for only two things: bad luck and E. Starling, the reclusive nineteenth century author of The Underland, who disappeared over a hundred years ago. All she left behind were dark rumors—and her home. Everyone agrees that it’s best to ignore the uncanny mansion and its misanthropic heir, Arthur. Almost everyone, anyway.

A slow-burn, historical romance-horror.
A strong, chilling tale, with good bones, and a bright hearth. Excellent, riveting performance.

Historia
In “You Just Need to Lose Weight,” Aubrey Gordon equips listeners with the facts and figures to reframe myths about fatness in order to dismantle the anti-fat bias ingrained in how we think about and treat fat people. Bringing her dozen years of community organizing and training to bear, Gordon shares the rhetorical approaches she and other organizers employ to not only counter these pernicious myths, but to dismantle the anti-fat bias that so often underpin them.

Essential reading; exceptionally well-written and performed
Revisado: 02-02-23
This book is an excellent starting place to learn about anti-fatness in English-speaking nations. Regardless of our individual body size, anti-fatness affects us ALL negatively (to wildly differing degrees), so you likely have a personal stake in this discussion.
Aubrey Gordon’s writing is simultaneously intensely academically researched and accessible to multiple audiences. As a neurodivergent person, I particularly appreciate the inclusion of mini scripts for addressing anti fatness interpersonally.
Gordon is honest about her own and other fat peoples’ experiences, and the deeply hurtful impact of anti-fatness on fat people. At the same time, she also (heroically) manages to validate the *feelings* of the audience, without excusing any anti-fat *behaviors*.
If you are considering purchasing this book, it is worth your time and money to do so. And, if you are not ready or willing to confront your own biases and attitudes toward fat folks, wait to read this book. By all means, still buy it if you are able! But don’t feel bad about putting it on your shelf (or in your Library) until you are ready to do the internal work.
The text will likely make you uncomfortable. It makes me uncomfortable and I have been intently learning about social justice for a decade.
These discussions are supposed to be de-stabilizing. It is okay. You are okay. Growing is painful, and deeply engaging in this kind of growth can only make your character better, even if it may feel in the moment like you’re not as altruistic or “good” as you thought.
