Historia
1660 England. General Edward Whalley and his son-in law Colonel William Goffe board a ship bound for the New World. They are on the run, wanted for the murder of King Charles I—a brazen execution that marked the culmination of the English Civil War, in which parliamentarians successfully battled royalists for control.

Gripping read
Revisado: 10-09-23
Always enraptured by Harris’ writing, this was stupendous. I really understood the research that went into this, and he gave the characters (in my amateur opinion) very reasonable human reactions to what we actually know of them. He made each a dynamic, complicated person—something we could all try to understand these days. Though I am frustrated by Will’s actions in chapter 32, despite thinking it’s what he would do!
Tim’s narration was flawless. I’m not sure I would listen to this book without it (in that case, physical reading!). Had me on the edge of my seat.

Historia
Cyrus Barker, along with his former assistant and now partner Thomas Llewelyn, is the premier enquiry agent in all of 19th-century London, and beyond. They've thwarted the designs of villains and crooks off all sorts, helped Scotland Yard crack their most challenging cases, and worked for the Her Majesty's Government at the very highest levels. But nothing has been quite as challenging and dangerous as the latest case that comes to find them.

Entertaining

Another entertaining book in the series. Utterly relieved it wasn’t the “Thomas and Rebecca have a baby” story. I enjoy the books in the series focused on the case.

Historia
Over thirty million people have read The Diary of a Young Girl, the journal teen-aged Anne Frank kept while living in an attic with her family and four other people in Amsterdam during World War II, until the Nazis arrested them and sent them to a concentration camp. But despite the many works—journalism, books, plays and novels—devoted to Anne’s story, none has ever conclusively explained how these eight people managed to live in hiding undetected for over two years—and who or what finally brought the Nazis to their door.

Intriguing story, too passive
Revisado: 02-10-23
Incredibly well researched and intriguing from start to finish. Only critique is too much passive voice. Made it incredibly hard (for me) to understand who did which action. Passive voice is sometimes necessary, and I understand they couldn’t draw definitive conclusions, but it was used far more often than required. Would love to read it again in mostly active voice.

Historia
On the surface, the Victorian age is one of propriety, industry, prudishness and piety. But scratch the surface and you’ll find scandal, sadism, sex, madness, malice and murder. Presented by Stephen Fry, this series delves deep into a period of time we think we know, to discover an altogether darker reality. The stories we’re told offer a different perspective on an era which underwent massive social change. As education, trade, technology and culture blossomed, why was there an undercurrent of the ‘forbidden’ festering beneath Victorian society?

Overall, very entertaining book that provided a few new tidbits to this Victorian enthusiast that already knew many of the “secrets.” I’m only upset with the acting/dramatic readings. I just wanted Stephen Fry! The readings were too cheesy.

Colin Dickey is on the trail of America's ghosts. Crammed into old houses and hotels, abandoned prisons and empty hospitals, the spirits that linger continue to capture our collective imagination, but why? His own fascination piqued by a house hunt in Los Angeles that revealed derelict foreclosures and "zombie homes", Dickey embarks on a journey across the continental United States to decode and unpack the American history repressed in our most famous haunted places.

I was hoping for more ghost stories and less of a philosophical discussion on why ghosts stay where they do. There were some interesting points, but this was mostly a miss for me. I don’t recommend it, unless you want that you philosophical discussion or you are unfamiliar with American history.

Historia
C. S. Lewis is the 20th century's most widely read Christian writer and J. R. R. Tolkien its most beloved mythmaker. For three decades they and their closest associates formed a literary club known as the Inklings, which met weekly in Lewis' Oxford rooms and a nearby pub. They read aloud from works in progress, argued about anything that caught their fancy, and gave one another invaluable companionship, inspiration, and criticism.

Historia
The life of Princess May of Teck is one of the great Cinderella stories in history. From a family of impoverished nobility, she was chosen by Queen Victoria as the bride for her eldest grandson, the scandalous Duke of Clarence, heir to the throne, who died mysteriously before their marriage. Despite this setback, she became queen, mother of two kings, grandmother of the current queen, and a lasting symbol of the majesty of the British throne.

I was sincerely disappointed that this book spent a lot of time covering the relationship between George V and this sons. This book covered the family as a whole with tidbits of Queen Mary thrown in. Did provide some good insight on her though.

Historia
A captivating true story that chronicles the exploits of Sir Francis Walsingham - the first great English spymaster and the man who saved Elizabeth's regime and the country's independence. Elizabeth I came to the throne at a time of insecurity and unrest. Rivals threatened her reign; England was a Protestant island, isolated in a sea of Catholic countries. Spain plotted an invasion, but Elizabeth's Secretary, Sir Francis Walsingham, was prepared to do whatever it took to protect her. He ran a network of agents in England and Europe who provided him with information about invasions or assassination plots.

This acclaimed best seller from popular historian Alison Weir is a fascinating look at the Tudor family dynasty and its most infamous ruler. The Six Wives of Henry VIII brings to life England’s oft-married monarch and the six wildly different but equally fascinating women who married him. Gripping from the first sentence to the last and loaded with fascinating details, Weir’s rich history is a perfect blend of scholarship and entertainment.

Interesting read
Revisado: 07-10-17
I enjoyed this book, as I do Alison Weir's other works, but I do have some complaints. She spent way too much discussing Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn. I recognize that it was a major part of Henry VIII's life, but it's also something that's pretty well known. I would have enjoyed more on his other wives. However, this book shows its age when Weir discusses Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard, Catherine Parr, and Lady Jane Grey. Much research has been done in the past 26 years to disprove or at least question the claims made in this book. So while I recommend it, don't take it at face value. Further research is needed.

Many are familiar with the story of the much-married King Henry VIII of England and the celebrated reign of his daughter, Elizabeth I. But it is often forgotten that the life of the first Tudor queen, Elizabeth of York, Henry's mother and Elizabeth's grandmother, spanned one of England' s most dramatic and perilous periods. A well-done history of this lovely lady. The only disappointment was the narrator, whose voice was perfectly pleasant when she wasn't doing silly voices/accents—which easily distracted me from what was being read. I so wish she hadn't done accents or voices other than her own!!
