What a survivor!
Revisado: 12-04-17
This account of a hero was well presented, both in the reading as well as in the composition.
I found the description of the lives of the people of the fishing community, a well done sociological profile, to be a bonus adding to the saga experienced by one of their own.
As for the individual conquering his tremendous misfortune, depiction of the traits that comprised the man told clearly of how he put himself into a position to not yield to defeat.

Historia
First published more than 100 years ago, Hard Tack and Coffee is John Billings' absorbing account of the everyday life of a US Army soldier during the Civil War. It is written by a person who would know the material best, a genuine Civil War soldier.

Appreciation for Everyday Life for Civil War Soldiers
Revisado: 06-26-16
I most liked the detail told largely through anecdotes of such a vast array of aspects of soldiering. Anyone wanting to know what army life was like, from the plight of horses, mules, pigs and cattle to the burying of the dead would like this account. The depth would no doubt be too much regarding some topics for some; however, others with a broad interest would seldom if ever abandon a chapter before its completion.

Historia
In this detailed and fascinating account of the legend of the "Wizard of the Saddle," we see a man whose strengths and flaws were both of towering proportions, a man possessed of physical valor perhaps unprecedented among his countrymen. And, ironically, Forrest - the first grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan - was a man whose social attitudes may well have changed farther in the direction of racial enlightenment over the span of his lifetime than those of most American historical figures.

I now know what Sherman meant
Revisado: 05-02-16
Having finished Sherman's memoirs, I went next to Hurst's biography of Forrest in order to gain an understanding of the admiration, trepidation, and mystery with which Sherman viewed the cavalry general. The book showed through the tenacity, improvisation of tactics, and cleverness that earned the highest praise of Sherman.
The story of involvement and even leadership of the Klan gave a context that did add some understanding of the forces at play early in reconstruction. That Forrest decried the terrorism that the organization utilized is not a subject upon which I can comment.
From this account, Forrest went a long way toward putting the war and his pre-war activities behind him. His post-war life begs additional study.

Historia
Her palace shimmered with onyx, garnets, and gold, but was richer still in political and sexual intrigue. Above all else, Cleopatra was a shrewd strategist and an ingenious negotiator. Though her life spanned fewer than forty years, it reshaped the contours of the ancient world. She was married twice, each time to a brother. She waged a brutal civil war against the first when both were teenagers. She poisoned the second. In a masterly return to the classical sources, Stacy Schiff here boldly separates fact from fiction to rescue the magnetic queen whose death ushered in a new world order.

Fabulous - Greatly Exceeded Expectatiions
Revisado: 02-09-11
The author's maticulously researched and written work not only well portrayed the events of two thousand years ago but also described the characters thoroughly. The narrator skillfully place emphasis and paced the reading pleasingly. I have recommended this audiobook to my friends enthusiastically.
