Historia
In southeast London, a young mother has been accused of an unthinkable crime: poisoning her own child - and then leaving him to die. The mother, Ellie, is secretive and challenging - she's had a troubled upbringing - but does that mean she's capable of murder? Balancing the case with raising her disabled five-year-old son, criminal defence lawyer Sarah Kellerman sets out in desperate pursuit of the truth. But when her own child becomes unwell, Sarah realises she's been drawn into a dangerous game.

Sloppy
Revisado: 11-16-18
This was a big disappointment as it had been well reviewed on Amazon. However I found the badly written, sloppy prose and the whiny tone of the book deeply irritating and I soon gave up the fight, the reading was also bad. The narrator slipped from Posh to a northern accent mid sentence and was clearly trying too hard to establish any fluency. I would call this bad chick lit rather than thriller. I will return the book.

Ugh
Revisado: 05-09-18
This book was dreadful. A collection of thoroughly unbelievable and unpleasant characters and a far fetched tale. The device of interspersing the story with so called counseling supervision sessions is laughable. That someone as witless, self absorbed and disturbed as Jess could possibly be considered as a therapist is risible.
The writing and narration are not too bad but the story line? Please......

Historia
London rules might not be written down, but everyone knows rule one. Cover your arse. Regent's Park's First Desk, Claude Whelan, is learning this the hard way. Tasked with protecting a beleaguered prime minister, he's facing attack from all directions himself: from the showboating MP who orchestrated the Brexit vote and now has his sights set on Number 10; from the showboat's wife, a tabloid columnist, who's crucifying Whelan in print; and especially from his own deputy, Lady Di Taverner, who's alert for Claude's every stumble.

Brilliant!
Revisado: 02-14-18
Mick Herron has to be one of the best crime/spy writers on the scene today. Not only is he an intelligent and highly skilled writer who is a joy to read but he has a wickedly acute sense of humour and is an wry observer of our common humanity.
The Slough House series goes from strength to strength.
i can't recommend this book highly enough - outstanding.

Historia
Anna Fox lives alone - a recluse in her New York City home, unable to venture outside. She spends her day drinking wine (maybe too much), watching old movies, recalling happier times...and spying on her neighbors. Then the Russells move into the house across the way: a father, mother, their teenaged son. The perfect family. But when Anna, gazing out her window one night, sees something she shouldn't, her world begins to crumble. And its shocking secrets are laid bare.

Drab, dreary and depressing
Revisado: 01-06-18
This is the worst book I have listened to in a long time. Utterly dreary tale not very well told of a self obsessed neurotic. It meanders aimlessly about and never says or does anything.
I cannot believe the hype from authors I respect - I can only assume they were paid to give positive reviews. This is an atrocious piece of writing.

Historia
The first in a new series by debut author Mark Lock, for fans of Mo Hayder, Belinda Bauer and Mark Billingham. Detective Inspector Hal Luchewski's life is complicated. The stress of his job is getting to him - usually in the form of hard liquor. He's still living in his dead father's shadow, his relationship with his daughter is strained and his love life is complex, to say the least.... Although nearly 40, Hal's still reconciling himself to the fact he's gay.

Excellent tight, intelligent thriller perfectly read by Paul Thornley.
Very sympathetic hero whose humanity, strength and frailty make this more than a formulaic read. Fantastic plot that keeps you guessing beautifully written.
Can't wait for the next one.

Risable
Revisado: 08-07-15
I am often surprised at the quality of manuscripts that make it to publication. This is a case in point. The author clearly knows nothing about Asperger's Syndrome which afflicts her tedious central character & she insults her readers and those who have the Syndrome by her shoddy depiction of it. Why she could not take the time to do a little basic research at the very least escapes me.
The book is also badly written and peppered with grammatical errors and clumsy prose. The story line is totally unbelievable & frankly laughable.
The reader does a passable job given the execrable material.
If I could have given this book no stars in order to comment on it - I would have.

Timely and transfixing.
Revisado: 07-07-14
I really could not stop listening to this gripping thriller. Amazon lists this as the start of a series - I do hope so.
DI Hanlon, "the face of post feminist policing", as a colleague describes her, is a complex and fascinating character - a cross between Boudicca and Superwoman. She may cut corners and dispense her own rough justice but we are behind her all the way. The plot is dark and sometimes deeply disturbing focusing as it does on institutional corruption and paedophilia but it is executed in an intelligent and un salacious manner and keeps the reader hooked until the end.
Extremely well written and extremely well read - this is I hope a tantalizing foretaste of things to come.

Excellent Book Spoilt by Drab Narration.
Revisado: 05-31-14
Mark Billingham always delivers high quality, enjoyable fiction but he is not a good narrator.
This could have been an outstanding listen but was severely diminished by drab lack lustre narration by the author.
Excellent plot and though still enjoyable the monotonous drone of the reader really spoilt this for me. Next time use someone good like Paul Thornley.

This is an magnificent novel. Brilliantly crafted, excellent characterisation and with a plot that intrigues until the end. This is Sophie Hannah at the height of her powers - I was transfixed. Julia Barrie's narration is faultless. I defy any one who loves a psychological thriller not to enjoy this hugely.
