The word choices of the author seemed accurate in style to Norse culture and mythology. His audio telling of it further brought it to life and was incredibly engaging. The story felt so complete, too (unlike many modern tellings of mythology that seem to end abruptly and without a true understanding of the purpose of the story that they were trying to tell)! Of all the many modern tellings of mythology that I have read or listened to (both Greek and Norse), this has been my favorite! I think anybody who likes European mythology would find this enjoyable, and I give it my highest recommendation.

Do I pick Scylla (physical book) or Charybdis (audiobook)?

I was under the impression that this was written as a single cohesive story told chronologically. It is not. For example, Orpheus’ life and death is told about before the Argonauts myth is told (Orpheus was one of the Argonauts). I was pleased with the accuracy of many details, but there were too many that were made up by the author, Johnson. Some details from the original myths were outright changed! Although limited, I wasn’t a fan of the unnecessarily crude language or potty humor, either. It’s definitely lacking in sophistication. The narrator’s baby talk for Hermes and her nasally(?) voice for King Eurystheus didn’t do this book any favors. On the plus side, it comprehensively covers the many Greek myths! (If you’re not bothered by inaccuracies or just aren’t intimately familiar with the original myths, this would probably be a 3-star book instead of a 2-star book).

It was hard to get through this audiobook. The stories were broken up and not chronologically ordered. Why do we hear the story about Odysseus and Polyphemus at the beginning of her book, rather than later during her telling of the Odyssey? (The Odyssey was well written and caused me to rate this book a 3 instead of a 2). There was also a lot about the poets who wrote down the myths, while important details in the stories themselves were omitted. For a book that has been so well-regarded for decades as the bar by which to measure books on Greek Mythology, I was surprised at how briefly summarized the actual stories were. Hamilton also stated that all we know about the Odyssey comes only from Homer, which is erroneous. There are at least three other sources. I’d forgive the statement - owing it to the lack of access to the ancient texts in her day - but she elsewhere referenced Ovid’s Metamorphoses, so she definitely had access to at least one more source other than Homer. Overall, most of the book seemed like it was a brief summary of facts, rather than engaging storytelling. I’m just glad I got this audiobook with a free book credit.
