I wanted more at the end!
Revisado: 02-24-25
The poetic language made me feel immersed in the culture I will never experience. Although the ending was as beautiful as the beginning, I wanted more!

Historia
When Laura Munson’s essay appeared in the “Modern Love” column of The New York Times, it created a firestorm. Readers sent it to their friends, therapists gave it to their patients, pastors read it to their congregations. People everywhere were struck by Munson’s wisdom. But how was she able to implement this strategy? How was she able to commit herself to an “End of Suffering” in such a critical time?

This author has the gift!
Revisado: 05-31-24
It started slowly. I was just about ready to stop listening when it kicked in. The beginning is like stream of consciousness writing she needed to get out of the way in order to get to her story. But, like Willa’s Grove, it touched me right in the feels!

Not realistic
Revisado: 03-10-24
High school seniors in the 21st century do not use the word “lest,” nor do they hear “two more bites,” from their parents about eating. I’m assuming this is written by someone who does not have children because the reality is not believable I also kept waiting for something exciting to happen, but each even was just meh. Definitely only read to the end just to see what I would miss, but I will not recommend to any of my preteen or teen students.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Best therapy ever!
Revisado: 02-06-24
I have never had an eating disorder, an acting career, or an ability to sing, but this book reinforced once again, that writing is the best therapy ever! This is a story worth your time if for no other reason than you need to know how much a screen distorts life.

As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children gripping a tree trunk in terror, wearing blood-filled sneakers, and unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours. Twenty years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a secret.

Tough to finish
Revisado: 12-28-23
The main character, detective Ryan, is a weak man and his thoughts and actions makes you want to tell him so several times. The subtle hint of mythical monsters is an underdeveloped point that should have been eliminated by the editor before it went to print. Overall, I am sad I devoted my time to this meh story.

My reading pals have been toting their love for Kingsolver for years, but for me she has always been “meh”! This is no longer the case. Read this book. It’s worthy of your devotion, and it’s great regardless of you having read David Copperfield.
