Like a punch in the stomach

Definitely bleak and depressing at times (most of the time), but punctuated by hope and put in stark contrast by a father's love of his son. There were plenty of times I was hesitant to come back to this world. The prose is so detailed I felt like I was there, even when I wish I was more detatched. I'm glad I stuck with it and my mind has continuously wandered back to this story since I listened a month ago. It's tough, but good....really good. What more can I say that hasn't been said except that I went home and gave a huge hug to my kids...and bought some jugs of water just in case.

Probably the best audio book I've heard yet!

What can you say that hasn't been said yet? I read the book 5 times and picked this up for a trip. I never get tired of hearing this part of Ender's story. If you're interested in what happens to Peter, the later Shadow books shed a lot of light on his character and his redemption. In this audiobook, the voices for the characters were right on. I've had my own voices for them for so long, now I will hear the voices from this version when I read it again. In response to the military guy below, I hear the Marine officer school had this as required reading for quite some time. Frack'in awesome. Why can't they all be produced as well as this one?

Stop the pain

I'm not sure I can say anything that hasn't been said already. The narration is pretty bad, as is the story. I was hoping for a short and entertaining fantasy in the vain of Wheel of Time or Lord of the Rings. This was not it. The only thing I can think of is that this series is for the very young reader, one who is completely fresh to the common themes in Fantasy. That said maybe the print version of the book is better.....but I doubt it.

Don't expect this book......

to be like "The Partly Cloudy" Patriot or "This American Life". Make no mistake, this is a history book. While I admit that a few hours of her voice is grating, her narration does draw you into amazing true stories she lays out for us. REALLY amazing insight and a genuine appreciate for the subject matter. You get the feeling she's been waiting to write this for sometime. I really enjoyed it and plan on reading Manhunt and Team of Rivals soon just to learn a little more. I agree with the previous poster. History for people who don't like history.

Great Travel Read!

I have to say that I was unimpressed at first. I had actually read A Walk in the Woods and loved it. I think actually hearing his voice put me off. The more I listened though, I was completely entralled. I have never been interested in Australia until this. I found myself asking my wife if she knew that there were 12 foot long earthworms? That place sounds desolate, hot, and a wonderful alternate version of what America might have been. I can't wait to go.....that's all I'm saying.

Sometimes, in the middle of a book, you curse the fact that there is not an abridged version. This is not one of those times. In fact I only have one complaint about this audio book,I want to see the pictures that are included in the print version of the book.

This is an amazing listen that is also well written and well read. Gust, Charlie, and the rest of the cast are well characterized and their roles are all well deined. George Crile does an amazing job of giving you the background for each of these characters and the context in which this amazing series of events occurred.

A fantastic behind the scenes view of a few key players helping to bring about the end of the Cold War. Best book I've listened to yet.

Revealing and Sarcastic

Total
3 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 03-11-05

While the information in this book is revealing and extensive, the writing comes off as extraordinarily sarcastic. I'm listening to it as I write this and I move between outrage and irritation. While I consider myself a member of the "left", this is a piece of militant liberalism and hurts the cause as much as it helps it. I can't help but feel that the information and stories in this book would have been better served by a different reader reading information that was framed in a different way.
