Hooks you till the last page!

If this is your first dip into the Inspector Gamache series, you will not be left wondering what’s what in the important parts because the author
harkens back and fills in the needed details periodically, enough for newcomers, but not so much for those of us who know already - plus sometimes we need a reminder or two. The story stands well alone and hooks you and won’t let you go till the last page.

It’s been years since my sis-in-love gave me Still Life as a Christmas gift and I loved that one, obviously, since I’m still reading the stories - listening in this case - 18 books later.

If you’ve read from book one, you know the backstory and you are invested in the characters, the story, the connection to Quebec. Penny’s attention to detail, diamond faceted with each character and how they each intertwine with the small healing village of Three Pines, makes you feel like a friend forever.

This is my first Audible experience with the series and I wondered if I’d like this format. After reading 17 previous books with voices already formed in my head, Robert Bathurst sounds just as I imagined Gamache’s voice to sound, not just in timber but in spirit, so he gets an A+!

I was thinking I could listen to a half hour or so a day when choosing my third Tessa Afshar story, Daughter of Rome, - you know, to make it last - but found myself finishing it too quickly just like the previous two. I guess that is a good problem, to not be able to put a story down. The sad part is you grow close to the characters and hate to say goodbye at the end which is one reason I wanted to make it last longer.

I loved this story, what could have been the journey of Aquila and Priscilla, a married couple mentioned by the Apostle Paul in the New Testament. I love how they served Yeshua together as a team, side by side, in the midst of life’s dramas and their individual pain. The story unfolds as they find their way imperfectly yet in faith that all would turn out well for them as they choose to love and help others through it all.

Loved this story of what Lydia of the New Testament could have been like and how her life eventually became interwoven with Paul of Tarsus and his band of believers. The depth of research done to write this story is evident throughout the book. I felt immersed in the culture of the day and Biblical principles of forgiveness and redemption shine throughout without coming across as cheesy or too sweet. This is not a shallow romantic tale but one of mystery and suspense. It leaves me inspired to overcome obstacles and fear in my own life that may hold me back. Thank you Tessa Afshar! Also, the narration was an excellent match! Would definitely listen to other books read by Rendah Heywood.

I loved listening to The Last Garden in England! The stories of each woman interwoven with the same garden created a world of mystery and enchantment that I am now reluctant to leave. Great idea to have each woman’s voice read by a different narrator. It not only added variety but helped keep track of who was who.

I read the book first but wanted to hear Rebecca’s story in her own voice so bought it on Audiobooks which did not disappoint. Some authors’ narration do fall short but this one did not! Her pace is strong and steady and she speaks with the authority of one who has lived to tell, but also maintains a humility gleaned from coming to terms with the part she played in what took place. Even though I knew where the story was going, I was still compelled to listen to the end and I actually heard more this time as a listener. This is definitely a book to share with anyone who is in a controlling, abusive relationship and needs to know how to get free, and then to live free, not as a victim but as a victor.

This is a very satisfying story that seems to have all the qualities I look for in a great read, or in this case, a great listen. It’s a perfect blend of a compelling mystery and a tender love story, yet not overly saturated with the romantics. It’s a long
Story yet moves at a thrilling pace. It’s a family saga complete with both heroes and villains. It has lessons of loyalty as well as showing how we need healthy boundaries amidst family dysfunction and in the end helped me see love and dysfunction does and can coexist and how it needs to come out into the open to begin to be fixed. Even though it’s a period piece and shows how humans of that time viewed and judged each other according to the then social norms, you can recognize in human nature how we still tend to pigeonhole people by class and status today. The author shows how we all have a backstory that affects how we interact with others, and she sends a clear message of how God has made us all of value and worth whether we, or others, see it or not. The narrator is excellent and easy to listen to and doesn’t detract from the story in any way.

I’m very encouraged by Sean’s book to StanD in faith for all we are believing God for. Wow to how much opposition he and his team faced when their only intent was to bring hope and encouragement to the cities they were planning to worship in. He explains how to be true to your convictions without malice or taking on the mean spiritedness those who oppose you may have. Put your need to be understood and even your need to be well thought aside. Just stand and keep going forward in love and confidence trusting God to see you through. When you do it that way, God can do great and beautiful things through you for those who are in pain and despair.

I just finished this, the second book in the series! I like the female Sherlock as much as the male, maybe even more. Charlotte and her chins had me laughing. Can’t wait to hear the next book in the series now since I’m obviously hooked. The story, characters and narration all excellent and compelling.

“Leaving Everything” is my favorite in the series so far which so many layers of wisdom to be gleaned even though the story is set in another time. But then again, I’m finding I feel the same with each book I finish! Each one takes me deeper into Maisie’s world and this one was no exception. I’m becoming quite attached to all the main characters in the stories and even those who are part of only the current book I’m listening to. Osha (not sure how it’s spelled since I’m only listening and not reading) was such a compelling character in this book that I was sad to say goodbye by the end.

I also want to give a shout out to Orlagh Cassidy as narrator of the series. A perfect story teller as most of the voice accents in the book are astoundingly believable. And of course as Maisie’s voice she is a perfect fit! I wouldn’t want to hear her from anyone else now!
