Historia
For half a century, we have been trained to believe that our right brain hemisphere is our emotional brain, while our left brain houses our rational thinking. Now neuroscience shows that it's not that simple: In fact, our emotional limbic tissue is evenly divided between our two hemispheres. Consequently, each hemisphere has both an emotional brain and a thinking brain. In this groundbreaking new book, Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor presents these four distinct modules of cells as four characters that make up who we are.

Some interesting and useful information in the first few chapters. Found narration uneven at best, like chalk on blackboard much of the time.

Historia
To the costermongers of Covent Garden Eddie Pettit was a gentle soul with a gift for working with horses. When Eddie is killed in a violent accident, the grieving costers are skeptical about the cause of his death. Who would want to kill Eddie - and why? Maisie Dobbs' father, Frankie, had been a costermonger, so she had known the men since childhood. She remembers Eddie fondly and is determined to offer her help. But it soon becomes clear that powerful political and financial forces are equally determined to prevent her from learning the truth behind Eddie's death.

This is narrated by the "Queen of Dialects"?
Revisado: 09-21-15
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I'd recommend the Maisie Dobbs series in print, but where on earth does Orlagh Cassidy come up with all these awful phony (and largely pathetic) accents and "unique" pronunciations.
What other book might you compare Elegy for Eddie to and why?
Although nothing like Elegy for Eddie, for the sheer pleasure of listening to a spectrum of British, African, Caribbean and American accents done superbly well, without a single inflection out of place, listen to the Ghanaian-born actor Kobna Holdbrook-Smith.
Would you be willing to try another one of Orlagh Cassidy’s performances?
Never
Was Elegy for Eddie worth the listening time?
Somehow, years ago, I managed to get through listening to the previous audiobooks in this series. But with this one - no doubt being spoiled by recent great narrations - I was ready to scream half an hour in. Returning it.

Historia
You are about to travel to Edgecombe St. Mary, a small village in the English countryside filled with rolling hills, thatched cottages, and a cast of characters both hilariously original and as familiar as the members of your own family. Among them is Major Ernest Pettigrew (retired), the unlikely hero of Helen Simonson's wondrous debut. Wry, courtly, opinionated, and completely endearing, Major Pettigrew is one of the most indelible characters in contemporary fiction, and from the very first page of this remarkable novel he will steal your heart.

Once again Michael Crichton gives us his trademark combination of page-turning suspense, cutting-edge technology, and extraordinary research. State of Fear is a superb blend of edge-of-your-seat suspense and thought provoking commentary on how information is manipulated in the modern world.

How did this narration pass editorial review?
Revisado: 08-10-09
Despite the far-fetched action plot, Crichton's research into the climate change issues here seems sound. But unless you can stomach someone else's swallowing, burping and dispeptic rumbling directly your ears I recommend the print version. Surely other narrators swallow, but of the hundred of books I've listened to, I've encountered only about 5 audible swallowers. Most of the interruptions in this audiofile could readily have been edited out, and the dispeptic sections could have been re-read when the narrator's stomach was more comfortable. Shame on Harper Audio for releasing this. George Wilson has been added to my blacklist of narrators.

Brilliant story, pitch perfect narration
Revisado: 03-20-09
This is an epic surely destined to become a "cut in stone" classic, a gem so perfectly cut that it sparkles from every facet. Best of all, the story is filled with characters so human and alive, even in death, that I for one wish to keep them close by me forever. And Sunil Mulhotra's mastery of narration for both sexes, over a large spectrum of age and accent, is so good I am grateful my first exposure to Cutting For Stone is through his voice.

Sophomoric
Revisado: 07-22-08
So awful it was nearly funny -- and might even have been amusing with a better narrator. But despite frequent cringing, I somehow managed to get to the end: I was trying to determine whether the heroine ever opened her mouth without the listener being informed that "she lied."

The face Esme Waters presents to the world is not the face she sees in the mirror. Even her three daughters don't know the truth behind her careful smile. But a chance meeting with a psychiatrist in Paris opens the first crack in Esme's mind. While her own children are falling in love, learning about loyalty, and rebelling against the rules, Esme discovers that sometimes the walls you build for protection need to come tumbling down.
