The second installment of Nanci Schwartz’s Robber Barrons series is full of intrigue, mystery, and rich relationship building. I can’t believe I have to wait five days for the next one to come out to learn what happens!

In this novel, we’re introduced to two sides of a not-so-cold war, genetically modified humans, and tangled relationships. Each piece of the puzzle plays a role in solving the mystery of what happened to an entire group of people, why it happened, and what it means for two nations who’ve been hovering between peace and all out war for two decades.

Schwartz creates a world that is both exactly like the one we live in today and completely different than what we’ve known. In true science fiction form, she uses this captivating story to explore themes of loyalty, betrayal, humanity, love, and compassion.

This story is poorly paced, has no real character development, and uses questionable theology. The dialogue is repetitive and just plain awful in several places and one of the villains was introduced as they were revealed. They were a character we’d never heard of until that scene!

The stories are fairly standard, but this author seems to have some weird food/eating/weight-related hang-ups. There’s also some strange possessiveness and ownership of women happening. Even the matriarch has gross manipulative tactics that are just brushed off. It’s sad because the last story really could be very good.

Julie Murphy knocks this one out of the park with a reimagining of a classic tale. Cindy is a fully-formed character and completely relatable.

The story is childish. The characters are flat and horribly named. There are plot holes large enough to fly a 747 through them. The narrator is atrocious. Her mispronunciation of well known names, places and landmarks is grating. The Thames sounds like Tims, not James with a TH.

Engines is the beautiful conclusion to Architects of Memory. Osborne not only answers the questions you’re left with at the end of the first book, she opens a whole new set of them by Chapter 12 of book 2. What a gorgeous exploration of memory and what it means to be human.

The story is convoluted and reads like a 15 year old wrote it. Don't waste your time.
