Too Arrogant

This has to be one of the most unlikeable authors I’ve ever tried. His writing is arrogant and repetitive and he talks down to his audience. I don’t understand how this book is so highly rated.

Dave, an investment counselor with PTSD, survives a blowout that kills his fiancee, Allison. A year later, Dave has found unexpected happiness with Cathy. At Dave's very-small-high-school reunion, Dave is stunned that he doesn't recognize anyone there. Cathy, who was previously victimized by a con man, breaks it off. Late that night, Dave gets a text: "How does it feel to be so quickly forgotten?" Apparently, someone close to Allison is angry that he has moved on so "soon." Dave's PTSD symptoms make him avoid conflict at almost any cost, so he hopes this will pass. It doesn't.

Ridiculously Implausible Yet Entertaining

I chose this book based solely on its settings. As a resident of Black Forest it is always fun to have familiar places mentioned in a work for fiction.
The story is completely implausible and the protagonist behaves in ways that no real human would behave, yet the story kept me entertained. Not a bad listen if you go in with no real expectations. I enjoyed the narrator.

Whiny and Unlikable

I couldn’t finish this book and returned it for a refund after a few hours. The author comes across as whiny and is impossible to like. She complains about having to clean pubic hairs off toilets, but then admits to snooping through personal items like prescriptions and receipts. She claims that judgement over her use of WIC and EBT was rampant, but also admits to being unable to read her vouchers and follow simple instructions. As a former WIC recipient I can tell you that it’s not that hard to read what the coupon is for and pick up the correct item. I stopped listening entirely when she complained that WIC no longer covered organic milk.

Never before have I felt like I was being mocked by a book, but this narrator was truly awful. He constantly put on a whiny voice to quote various feelings.
