Lawrence had a mastery over the omniscient point of view, and it shines here in his first novel.

Like Lady Chatterly’s Lover, the first quarter of the story dips your heart into a very specific place, and then the rest of the story is a contrast built around it.

Sons and Lovers is a worthy read, and like all other D.H. Lawrence stories, it sticks with you for a long time: the journey he takes you on.

I had heard this was a phenomenal classic, and so I had high expectations. When I first started listening to it, I loved Lydia West’s voice and accents, they were perfect; however, I quickly came to dislike the story itself.

The first quarter of the novel is very—ethereal. There’s a lot of old white rich men sitting around talking, and Connie is just presumably listening in on it. Often times, Lawerence doesn’t even introduce a scene or physical setting. Voices just jump out onto the page. Time feels blurry.

I was worried this would be the whole novel. But I stuck around to see her meet the games-keeper (which happens around chapter 8). And it was worth it!

Right away, physical scenes start appearing, and the books starts to read like a normal novel; rather than a bunch of philosophical ramblings and inner dialogue.

And that’s when I realized—Lawerence did this on purpose! Around the 25% mark, Connie begins falling into a depression. You start hearing her inner dialogue at the end of the cronies rambling: “I felt nothing. It was all meaningless. It was all just words.”

I knew the novel had a lot of sex in it, and I realized that the first quarter of the novel is showing how a life without sex—without physicality—is meaningless and ethereal. It all felt blurry and shapeless. Lawrence wrote the first quarter that way so that when Connie starts down the dangerous path of loving a man below her class, you can understand why it’s so appealing. The upper class is stuffy, snobby, philosophical, and out of touch with reality—and you feel it! You’ve suffered along side Connie haha.

Wow…I mean really…this is such a beautiful story—and it has a happy ending! What more could you ask for? I feel the world was robbed a great deal when Lawrence died young. He was a beautiful writer. You gotta listen to this story.

The story is great, narration could have been a little better.

I loved the story, and the ending had my heart racing, my fists balled, and I yelled repeatedly while washing the dishes because I wanted to know the ending so badly.

The narrator did a fine job with all of tue male characters. However, every female character sounded the same (aside from Pippa). The way Nick narrated every female was in the same, sickeningly sweet voice, which made them all sound naive. Layla’s voice and tone should have been deeper and more wise, so I would caution the listener and imagine her as more strong than she comes off.

Great story and worthy listen though!

I recommend listening to this reading at 1.2x or 1.3x speed. The performances are great.

If you’re new to reading classics, be prepared for lengthy expositions and “let me tell you my story” bits that begin with that character’s parents being born and ramble on to the present.

Hold out though, because at about 75% of the way through Frankenstein all of the pieces settle into place and you start to see the whole tapestry that Mary Shelley weaved for the characters.

The only complaint I have for the actually story is that all of the characters sound the same. This isn’t a performance issue, the narrators were great at changing their voices. It is merely the way in which all of the characters speak, they all have the exact same vocabulary and expression styles.

I believe Shelley was 19 when she wrote Frankenstein, so this criticism can be taken lightly. It’s also worth noting that she helped spawn an entire genre of fiction with this novel. Definitely worth a read.

Now on to Dracula!

This is one of those stories that leaves you with something after you’ve put it down. At the end of it, I came to understand just how precious and beautiful life is- from a new perspective. My mind’s eye now has eight of them.
