…but that was a tough listen. The upwards inflection at the end of every sentence gets so old, so fast. And, it seems the reader did absolutely no homework on pronunciations. The reader seemed uninvested in this project, and that was disappointing.

Historia
In The Small and the Mighty, Sharon McMahon proves that the most remarkable Americans are often ordinary people who didn’t make it into the textbooks. Not the presidents, but the telephone operators. Not the aristocrats, but the schoolteachers. Through meticulous research, she discovers history’s unsung characters and brings their rich, riveting stories to light for the first time.

Grossly overrated
Revisado: 11-06-24
The underlined stories that the author selected were great. Happy to learn about them. All of the author’s interjections? Preaching? Informality? That was just distracting. A better writer knows how to convey important messages without interjecting her voice at every other turn.

Historia
Even among iconic frontiersmen like John C. Fremont, Kit Carson, and Jedediah Smith, Jim Bridger stands out. A mountain man of the American West, straddling the fur trade era and the age of exploration, he lived the life legends are made of. Here, in a biography that finally gives this outsize character his due, Jerry Enzler takes this frontiersman's full measure for the first time—and tells a story that would do Jim Bridger proud.

Could use another edit
Revisado: 02-04-24
The only thing that got me through this book was the subject matter. The author needed a little help deciding with to include and what to leave out, making sure he didn’t repeat himself, and fact-checking a few things. He does a poor job at managing the sheer volume of names, dates, places, etc.

Historia
Drawing on a wealth of psychological research, Alfie Kohn points the way to a more successful strategy based on working with people instead of doing things to them. "Do rewards motivate people?" asks Kohn. "Yes. They motivate people to get rewards." Seasoned with humor and familiar examples, Punished by Rewards presents an argument unsettling to hear but impossible to dismiss.

4.5 stars
Revisado: 11-11-23
5 stars because the author so convincingly mounts a case against something that is virtually universally believed in our society.
4 stars because he should have rested his case with fewer pages.
Thus, 4.5 stars.

Historia
Zak George is a new type of dog trainer. His fresh approach puts a strong emphasis on the relationship with the individual dog - informed by breed-specific traits - allowing people to treat the root cause of behavior issues rather than the symptoms and teach their dogs faster without the use of punishments or stress. For the first time, George has distilled all the information from his hundreds of videos into one master guide.

Pretty Decent
Revisado: 01-20-23
Really useful take. He clearly knows a lot about training dogs. I get the impression he knows a little less about evolutionary biology, but the material was still quite good. Only knocks were 1) he used data to tell us why competing ideas were wrong, but often asserted opinions without backing them up; and 2) the EQ of his voice had him a bit nasally and it fatigues you.

Almost Perfect.

I’d give it 10 stars if I could. The book is a masterpiece, only bested by the best narration ever laid to a recording device.

Great story.
Revisado: 04-16-15
Compelling story. Not so compelling writing. Reads more like a company memo than a narrative, which is too bad, because the plot has so much potential, and would have been a bestseller in more crafty hands.
