Historia
In 2020, an invisible germ - a virus - wholly upended our lives. We're most familiar with the viruses that give us colds or Covid-19. But viruses also cause a vast range of other diseases, including one disorder that makes people sprout branch-like growths as if they were trees. Viruses have been a part of our lives for so long that we are actually part virus: the human genome contains more DNA from viruses than our own genes. Meanwhile, scientists are discovering viruses everywhere they look: in the soil, in the ocean, even in deep caves miles underground.

Quite interesting stories but not very deep
Revisado: 08-23-24
This was a short listen that felt well worth the time investment as it provided good information and interesting stories in a concise manner.
Optimally I'd have appreciated a little more scientific details about the mechanism and structure of different types of viruses though, but I reckon I'll have to find this info elsewhere.

Fascinating information but too long
Revisado: 02-16-24
The book contains a lot of fascinating information, but it's way too long and unwieldy in its lack of structure. I feel it could have cut down on the detail of all the examples from nature and kept a closer focus on how microbes affect us and our immediate surroundings, while perhaps pushing some detail to another volume.

Historia
What happened to the ancient Egyptians? When their civilization fell, did the Egyptian people disappear? Or do their descendants exist to this day? What about the ancient Persians? Romans? Mayans? For years, the answers to these questions have been hidden. But no more. Nathaniel T. Jeanson, a Harvard graduate with a PhD in cell and developmental biology, has discovered a DNA-based, generation by generation family tree for global humanity. This tree uncovers the origin and fate of these ancient peoples—and connects them to peoples alive today.

Very interesting findings, terrible narrator
Revisado: 10-05-23
I simply can not take in the content via this narrator who sounds little different than a robotic voice, completely disconnected from the content, just trying to rush through the text. Sad on such an interesting book!

My favorite bioinformatics podcast
Revisado: 08-11-23
I think I've listened through the whole thing. I have thoroughly enjoyed the discussions as a way to keep up to date with what's going on in the community.
If I'd wish anything, it is, don't be afraid to go a little deeper into technical and biological questions too.
But overall, the conversations are just great.

Useful info on clinical genomics in 10 min pieces
Revisado: 01-28-23
I'm looking into getting into clinical genomics and found these 10 minute pieces to be very well spent time to get an overview of the field, what topics are discussed and to understand how genomics is being used in medicine these days.
It is quite clear that the hosts are following a manuscript, and it would be a bit nicer with a bit more of a natural and relaxed style, but the info presented is still well worth the listen, and the presentation is very clear.

Geneticists like David Reich have made astounding advances in the field of genomics, which is proving to be as important as archaeology, linguistics, and written records as a means to understand our ancestry. In Who We Are and How We Got Here, Reich allows listeners to discover how the human genome provides not only all the information a human embryo needs to develop but also the hidden story of our species.

Interesting topic not very excitingly told
Revisado: 01-13-23
This book contains a lot of information that people interested in history should surely find exciting and interesting.
I definitely learned a thing or two, so I'm happy I listened through it, but the performance is a little so so in my opinion, and I was pretty bored at times listening thorough this.

One of the most enthralling stories I've read
Revisado: 06-14-20
Definitely one of the most moving and enthralling stories I've read. It is such a delight to follow the personal struggle of this truth-seeking and honest person, and the very close friendship between the author and his Christian friend David. At the same time, the book is very informative in regards to the thoughts and beliefs of Islam, and of course christianity.

John Archibald explores the science of genomics and its rapidly expanding toolbox. Archibald tells us how the field of genomics is on the cusp of another quantum leap; the implications for science and society are profound.

Excellent overview
Revisado: 06-05-20
Strikes a perfect balance in the level of detail presented, and framing the developments in a historical context. For a PhD in a related life science field who hadn't had the time to be up to date on all the details in genomics, it was 100% well used time listening to this.

Good concept, too short
Revisado: 05-30-20
I like the concept of telling the content in both Amharic and English as it allows you to follow along with just the audio, meaning it is much easier to find time to listen eg while you are out on a run or driving. One hour is really short for learning something useful. I'd wish for something at least few hours long. Still better than nothing, especially as there are not that many such resources available for Amharic out there.

Really good book, laid out in a good way
Revisado: 05-14-20
This is a really good book, laid out in a good way. It has some overlap to other similar books such as Cal Newport's "So good that they can't ignore you" and Barbara Oakley's "A mind for numbers", but it takes a much more comprehensive approach to covering all the relevant aspects important in self-directed hyper-intensive learning, and so was very well worth the listen.
I like how it both outlines general principles (listing 9 principles common among many ultralearners), and how it also goes into a lot of concrete practical information on how proven ultralearners have actually succeeded.
I did consume this book as an audiobook, as I find I have easier to find spare time to use in listening mode than reading mode. This was an interesting experiment, and probably helped me finish the book much faster than otherwise. The slight drawback I noted was that it wasn't as easy to interrupt my listening to take notes, something I wish I had done. Thus, I might re-read it as a normal book for taking more detailed notes. Should be well spent time nonetheless.
