This is not my usual genre. I much prefer a Jack Reacher or Patrick Kenzie novel as a rule, but I picked this one up as a 2 for 1 credit deal. Great story, great narration and great writer. I would say that women will prefer this book. Worth listening to.

Better than expected!
Revisado: 08-26-19
The cover image was a bit of a turn off but other reviews and the sample seemed interesting. The book and its sequel (Hum Little Birdie) are worth the credits and the narrator is spot on. Really engaged me. I read this type of books all the time and this budding series is a keeper. Reminds me a little of the Kenzie and Gennaro series by Dennis Lehane. Much recommended!

Disappointed
Revisado: 11-06-18
I truly love the Jack Reacher novels. I always look forward to the next installment every year. This particular book left me a little disappointed. Not enough Reacher in it and the two main story lines were quite predictable. But I'll keep on reading the series. However, I want to express my great displeasure at choosing Scott Brick for the narration. I understand that Dick Hill has retired - he's entitled, but Scott Brick is my least favorite of all narrators. His droning tone puts me to sleep and I forget that I'm listening to a book. Of all the good narrators out there (and I have listened to thousands of books), why was that one selected? This is not the voice of Jack Reacher. Please Audible, switch to another narrator for the next novel. I go out of my way to avoid books narrated by Brick.

Could be better
Revisado: 06-16-17
Any additional comments?
I always look forward to Finder's books but this one has a lot of holes. Assumptions are made and events go unexplained. Some actions and characters are a little unbelievable (and a bit of a caricature). Could be a good story if it was more "padded". I'll give Finder some points for his After 911 description of our world - scary. The narrator performance was great, as always. Will keep on buying Finder's books but I expect a little more next time.

Not Harry Potter but good series

I enjoyed this series. Very well written and quite imaginative. Maybe more suited to a younger audience (8-12) than Harry Potter but not "babyish" either. Good vocabulary and endearing characters.

An unabridged reading of Philip Pullman's nerve-shattering thriller, set in the murky streets and opium dens of Old London. When 16-year old Sally's father drowns in suspicious circumstances, she is left to fend for herself in Victorian London. Although she doesn't know it, she is already in terrible danger.

Another excellent Philip Pullman series!
Revisado: 01-23-15
Any additional comments?
Although historical novels are not usually my forte, this series is lively, interesting, full of well-developed and likable characters and, of course, well written. It's promoted as a "young adults" series but it really isn't. Not for the younger kids for sure as the stories are quite gritty and do not always end well. Philip Pullman has a knack for original writing. Love him!

This is Lyra: a savage, a schemer, a liar, and as fierce and true a champion as Roger or Asriel could want. But what Lyra doesn't know is that to help one of them will be to betray the other.

I come back to this series every few years. I love the originality of it. Well written, well narrated but, most of all, different in a good way. Recommended to everyone (kids and adults) who love a good story outside the box.

Not really worth it
Revisado: 12-01-14
Any additional comments?
I have read all the other books in the series and this one is not up to par. Too much commiseration and an implausible behavior by the main character. Just plain boring and disappointing. I used to look forward to this author's new releases but the last few were not good (except for the two books that she wrote with her daughter - those are a lot of fun to listen to).

It may not be a monster story à la Cujo but I quite enjoyed this book. I think that Stephen King is, above all, a master storyteller and I really felt like I went on a journey with him. Not disappointed in the least.

Every married couple knows you don't go to bed angry. The corollary, Cork O'Connor realizes, is that you also don't say goodbye when you're mad. When the charter plane Jo O'Connor is on crashes over the mountains in Wyoming in an early winter storm, Cork deeply regrets the heated argument he had with his wife just before she left. An intense search is launched, but bad weather and the steep terrain hinder the efforts and soon the search is abandoned.

A series that stays fresh
Revisado: 10-16-14
Any additional comments?
I am really enjoying this series. It's not the best written books I've ever read but they're good enough. What I find interesting is the way the author keeps reinventing the series. It's not always completely believable but, again, it's good enough. The author takes you on an interesting adventure in every installment and always includes the People living nearby in his stories. Refreshing. The narrator was changed along the way, not for the better but acceptable if not inspired. I recommend this series; it certainly isn't stagnant.
