Historia
In 1956, toward the end of Reverend John Ames's life, he begins a letter to his young son, an account of himself and his forebears. Ames is the son of an Iowan preacher and the grandson of a minister who, as a young man in Maine, saw a vision of Christ bound in chains and came west to Kansas to fight for abolition: He "preached men into the Civil War", then, at age 50, became a chaplain in the Union Army, losing his right eye in battle.

I have no idea why this book was written. I could not finish it. The narrator was fine. No complaints there. But the book? I’d rather be doing nothing than listen to another minute of it.

Historia
1992. All across the United States respectable, upstanding citizens are showing up dead. These deaths could be accidents, and they don’t appear to be connected—until a fatal fall from a high-floor window attracts some unexpected attention. That attention comes from the secretary of defense. All of a sudden he wants an interagency task force to investigate. And he wants Jack Reacher as the army’s representative. If Reacher gets a result, great. If not, he’s a convenient fall guy.

I still miss Dick Hill
Revisado: 03-23-24
Scott Brick is ruining these stories for me. He is as miscast as Reacher's narrator as Tom Cruise was playing Reacher in the two movies. These stories need a tough guy voice, Brick's is as tough as a marshmallow.

Historia
Reacher goes where he wants, when he wants. That morning he was heading west, walking under the merciless desert sun — until he comes upon a curious scene. A Jeep has crashed into the only tree for miles around. A woman is slumped over the wheel. Dead? No, nothing is what it seems. The woman is Michaela Fenton, an army veteran turned FBI agent trying to find her twin brother, who might be mixed up with some dangerous people. Most of them would rather die than betray their terrifying leader.

Best Reacher since Make Me
Revisado: 11-13-21
I’m not a fan of Scott Brick but thought he did okay in this one. I’ve been undecided if the last few books weren’t very good or if Brick was ruining a good story. I think a bit of both - the stories weren’t up to par but they didn’t stand a chance because of Brick’s reading. I think Dick Hill might have helped them be better. That said, Better Off Dead was a good Reacher story and Brick didn’t get in the way. His best performance so far and the Child brothers best book in a while.

It’s a shame I can only rate it 5 stars. The story is Neil Gaiman at his best and the performance does his story justice.

Historia
As always, Reacher has no particular place to go, and all the time in the world to get there. One morning he ends up in a town near Pleasantville, Tennessee. But there’s nothing pleasant about the place. In broad daylight Reacher spots a hapless soul walking into an ambush. “It was four against one” . . . so Reacher intervenes, with his own trademark brand of conflict resolution. The man he saves is Rusty Rutherford, an unassuming IT manager, recently fired after a cyberattack locked up the town’s data, records, information . . . and secrets.

Best Reacher in a While
Revisado: 12-22-20
I've listened to them all - quite a few of them repeatedly. The recent books seem to have lost their unique brand of excitement with Dick Hill's retirement. I'm wondering if Dick Hill's narration made the stories better than they might otherwise be. But saddled with Scott Brick, the new stories have little chance to be good. Brick's reading is the same regardless of the book he's reading or the characters who are speaking, With the exception of the Jack Reacher series, I won't buy a book if he's the narrator. Dick Hill's entitled to his retirement but how about George Guidall or someone who can give a Reacher-esque performance?
Had to get that off my chest.
The Sentinel is the best Reacher since Make Me, though not as good at that one, or Worth Dying For, or Killing Floor, or Never Go Back, or quite a few others. He's tough and kind, gets into fights and solves mysteries, champions the little guy and humbles the bullies, even (spoiler alert) gets the girl at the end before riding off into the sunset. I think with a better narrator this story might have reached classic Reacher heights or at least might have come closer.

Revisado: 12-22-20
Just having a little hyperbolical fun with that title. Or am I? The story of how the psychedelic era began is well told and a fun read (listen). I've read the book countless times and intend to listen to it just as many. "The bus came by and I got on, that's when it all began. There was Cowboy Neal at the wheel of the bus to never ever land." Absolutely.

Reacher is on a Greyhound bus, minding his own business, with no particular place to go and all the time in the world to get there. Then, he steps off the bus to help an old man who is obviously just a victim waiting to happen. But you know what they say about good deeds. Now, Reacher wants to make it right. An elderly couple have made a few well-meaning mistakes, and now they owe big money to some very bad people. One brazen move leads to another, and suddenly Reacher finds himself a wanted man in the middle of a brutal turf war between rival Ukrainian and Albanian gangs.

Not the best Reacher story
Revisado: 12-22-20
While not as entertaining as a good Jack Reacher story it is made worse by the narrator. I miss Dick Hill more and more with every syllable spoken. It's enough to make me return to reading books on paper.

Historia
About 15 percent of all Americans are estimated to be Marijuana smokers, and 56 million have tried it at least once. These figures have been published so often that it's easy to get the impression that marijuana smoking is one of the more secure 60s legacies. The trouble is that the statistics one always hears about relate to those who try or use marijuana. And the fact that those figures are staggering only makes it seem all the more surprising that a dramatic number of people have stopped using the drug.

OK Story, Not OK Narration
Revisado: 09-02-19
I'm a big Jack Reacher fan. I thought this story only okay. I kept thinking during the listen that if Dick Hill was reading I would have enjoyed it a lot more. Many people rate Scott Brick highly. I do not. I avoid buying books that he narrates. If Dick Hill cannot be coaxed out of retirement for one reading a year, I'm hopeful the publishers would seek out a narrator more in line with what we've come to expect and anticipate.

Not Even Close to Reacher
Revisado: 09-02-19
I bought the book because of the comparisons to Jack Reacher stories in a few reviews, and am writing this review to offer a pumping-of-the-brakes contrast to those opinions. Lee Childs is literature, not quite Raymond Chandler, but high-quality writing to be sure. James Beltz's story packs a lot of action, but it's often predicable and the characters two-dimensional.
By all means, if you enjoy action adventure fiction, you might want to check out the book. I listened expecting a Jack Reacher-like experience and was disappointed. Don't do that. Give the author and story a fair shake and go in clean.
