Legacies of Great Economists (of Europe)
Revisado: 07-01-24
Interesting if you consider the genesis of economics as a purely European endeavour. According to the author, nationhood, trade etc. were entirely new to the world in the late Middle Ages. When the author refers to “every nation” bear in mind he is referring to every western nation, ignoring the vibrant trade and economic activity east of Vienna.

Historia
Widely respected as a civil libertarian, legal educator, and defense attorney extraordinaire, Alan M. Dershowitz has also been a passionate though not uncritical supporter of Israel. In this audiobook, he presents an ardent defense of Israel's rights, supported by indisputable evidence. Dershowitz takes a close look at what Israel's accusers and detractors are saying about this war-torn country. He accuses those who attack Israel of international bigotry and backs up his argument with hard facts.

Helpful dribble

Listening to this was a poorly academic exercise, so subjecting myself to this propaganda was absolutely excruciating. It was helpful though, in understanding the power of nationalist gaslighting.

Historia
Mark Mathabane was weaned on devastating poverty and schooled in the cruel streets of South Africa’s most desperate ghetto, where bloody gang wars and midnight police raids were his rites of passage. Like every other child born in the hopelessness of apartheid, he learned to measure his life in days, not years. Yet Mark Mathabane, armed only with the courage of his family and a hard-won education, raised himself up from the squalor and humiliation to win a scholarship to an American university.

Absolutely gripping

As a South African raised in Apartheid South Africa myself, this book was eye opening. I found myself rethinking my own perceptions growing up. It is a must read for every South African today

Historia
The riveting memoirs of the outstanding moral and political leader of our time, Long Walk to Freedom brilliantly recreates the drama of the experiences that helped shape Nelson Mandela's destiny. From his beginning in the Transkei to his being taken to Robben Island, this is the remarkable story of how a man rose so far, only to be sentenced to life imprisonment. Emotive and compelling, this is the story of an epic life.

A disservice to a superb book
Revisado: 09-10-14
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narration was absolutely appalling. A terrible almost condecending attempt at a South African accent.
