This was a captivating story from a time when I was young, when Vietnam was part of my everyday existence, from the evening news to my sister's boyfriend off to war and soon to return minus an eye, arm, and leg. This story felt real and these characters are compelling, people i could have known and cared about. it was narrated beautifully and once I started, I didn't want to stop. I was sorry when it ended.

I usually listen on walks and when driving, but between the great characters and compelling story line, I found myself listening almost all weekend while cooking and everything else because I simply couldn't put it away. I love history and historical fiction and I cared about the characters so I found this a thrilling ride. I've recommended it to three people and I've downloaded two more of Kate Quinn's books to be my next Audibles.

I first read Stones from the River 25 years ago and, given the troubling hints of approaching fascism in America, I decided to revisit Hegi. Like SFTR, this is set in Bergdorf, beginning in 1934, this time focusing on a young teacher, her 4th grade boys being cultivated for Hitler Tough, and the intertwining histories that only a few see will lead to the Nazi destruction of all they've loved. It's an interesting combination of dispassionate storytelling and poetic language, full of brilliant observations that engaged head and heart without forca moment uslipping into melodrama. Hegi's characters feel believable, if not always likable. indeed, the teacher wants her students to think about courage vs hubris and what it means to be heroic. We see the small steps Hitler took to marginalize people and how people rationalized going on even if they didn't support him. They thought they could wait it out and he would go away. But each step from marginalizing built on the last -- Jews could not teach, then books must be burned, then children betrayed parents -- and soon it is unstoppable and everyone is focused on self-preservation. The parallels with total are too close for comfort.

I couldn't put this down. it was so fascinating to hear about the people who took it upon themselves to figure out about public health crises, including COVID, as I write this, often in the face of resistance from the CDC and other government agencies you would think we're having them. I'm so grateful they found each other to make headway in our current crisis. we have to do better at taking politics out of public health and learning from COVID so we can do better with the next pandemic, and there will be a next one.

I'm not sure what I expected from this, but what I got was a raw, honest account of a man working through tragedy and loss, self-destruction and redemption. it's beautifully written an narrated, and while the subject matter is sometimes horrifying, the portrayal of addiction is perhaps the most honest and graphic I've encountered (though it's not something I have read a lot about). I have a lot of compassion and hope for Hunter and even more admiration and respect and affection for his dad and mom. I have now ordered the book on Kindle. I hope I get to see some of Hunter's paintings if he shares them.

I've read a number of Sapolsky's books and have seen him interviewed, but what a joy to hear him lecture. How lucky we are to live in an age when his lectures can be available to so many and will be preserved for the future. I am now going to look for more of his lectures.

I grew up on the Beatles, even saw them live when I was seven, so was curious to see what a Gen X reviewer would have to say. The answer was plenty. The author is a fan (although a Paul Boy and I am decidedly a John Girl) who first heard them long after they broke up, and that perspective offers some insights I am too close to see. The chapter on the scream and girl groups opened up a new window. His hits on each one individually were fun -- I was happy to see Ringo get his due. This was a perfect listen in these dark Covid days and I found myself pausing periodically and listening to the song or album discussed, listening both in the new context and also revisiting old friends. This was time well spent.

After a steady dose of heavy political nonfiction over the last several months, I decided to take a break with on the lighter side. I've always enjoyed Amy Pohler on SNL, hosting awards with Tina Fay, and binge watching Parks and Recreation, but knew little about her. What I find out is that she's grounded, frank, laugh out loud funny, and often wise. I gave a friend a ride home the other day and had her listen to a chapter I had already heard and thought she would like and we ended up just driving around for an hour or more going no where in particular just to listen together and laugh. It's that kind of book.

I just finished the Audible version of Rick Wilson's new book, Running Against the Devil and recommend it to politicos committed to taking the White House (and both Houses of Congress) in November. I love Audible because I commute 2-3 hours a day, but Rick's books are especially great because he is so animated and, let's face it, snarky. This is for people serious about winning and it has really helpful analyses of voting segments, target states, key constituents, messaging, and more but if you're a longtime liberal like me, there are also some uncomfortable moments. You gotta have thick skin and an open mind for this one. I bought this for my Kindle , too, so I can refer to key chapters and take notes. I recommend it. Rick was a conservative ad man for 30 years and made me and my peeps scream with how painful (read: effective) his campaigns for Republicans were. He says Trump made him grow a soul and he wrote this as follow up to Everything Trump Touches Dies, and #ETTD was born.

I have worked at the intersection between corporations and nonprofits for most of my career and this book captures brilliantly the outcome of decades of devaluing the important role government plays in creating healthy people and healthy societies and the oversized role those with wealth and privilege play not only in economics but also in the social fabric of communities and increasingly the planet in such a way that no matter how much they give it will never come close to the damage they inflict. And they delude themselves into believing their privatization is making the world better.
