I think everyone…especially people that have to interact with anyone else….should know. So that’s everyone I guess. Being different isn’t odd and being the same as everyone else is.

Historia
Being a black woman in America means contending with old prejudices and fresh absurdities every day. Comedian Phoebe Robinson has experienced her fair share over the years: She's been unceremoniously relegated to the role of "the black friend", as if she is somehow the authority on all things racial; she's been questioned about her love of U2 and Billy Joel ("isn't that...white people music?"); she's been called "uppity" for having an opinion in the workplace; and yes, people do ask her whether they can touch her hair all. The. Time.

A lesson in blackness
Revisado: 10-02-24
What an awesome read. This author is funny, talented and raw. I got a kick out of the language and the mini lessons I learned and were so eager to share with my friends and family. I think I’ll have to listen to it again as ever the prologue’s letter to Oliver was full of need to know FACTS.

Historia
America’s backstory is a whitewashed mythology implanted in our collective memory. It should come as no surprise that the dominant narrative of American history is blighted with errors and oversights—after all, history books were written by white men with their perspectives at the forefront. It could even be said that the devaluation and erasure of the Black experience is as American as apple pie. In Black AF History, Michael Harriot presents a more accurate version of American history.

Great AF read…
Revisado: 09-27-24
I really enjoyed listening to this book. This author is intelligent and quirky keeping me interested and eager to share with a friend or two. My history is so beautiful and I’m so glad we are finally getting to share it with the world, and with those that want to know another narrative. Excellent read! I look forward to finding other titles by this same author.

Historia
In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time. He then investigates the nature of childhood, including why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent, thriving adults. Haidt shows how the “play-based childhood” began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the “phone-based childhood” in the early 2010s.

Gen Z shareable….
Revisado: 09-27-24
When I think about this book I can’t help but think about appetizers at a restaurant. They are meant to be slightly oversized but not quite a meal and shareable while you wait for the main course.
Immediately upon completing this book, I read it again. I want to remember the finer point so I could make them shareable with my Gen Z, high anxiety, daughter. You could have plugged her name in the majority of this book. So, by seeing her in this book I saw a solution to the worst part of her. Her attachment to her little black box courtesy of Apple. I have shared this book with her and I hope she take it in many times like and did. Reads it, thinks about it and learns from it. It’s what will help her live happy and free from the manmade monsters in her head. She deserves to be free, if she can know what’s best for herself. Excellent read!!

Historia
In The Righteous Mind, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt explores the origins of our divisions and points the way forward to mutual understanding. His starting point is moral intuition - the nearly instantaneous perceptions we all have about other people and the things they do. These intuitions feel like self-evident truths, making us righteously certain that those who see things differently are wrong. Haidt shows us how these intuitions differ across cultures, including the cultures of the political left and right.

Spark my love-hate relationship
Revisado: 09-03-24
As a black person born in the south and having lived for a short time in the north, I identified with 99.9% of this book. I love the history of sundown towns and neighborhoods and I’ve seen it all. This book helped me come to terms with my love-hate relationship with gentrification. I am the only black person on my street and daily I see the other half moving in and redefining my neighborhood. I hate being the token homeowning black and don’t allow myself to be intimidated. I show kindness and I get it back in return. I’m most grateful for the upgrades to the neighborhood schools and shopping centers. Now I just want to see housing prices allow more of ME to ability to buy. Keeping my fingers crossed. LOVED this book and I highly recommend it!

Historia
These days, no one in America feels immune to violence. But now, in this extraordinary, groundbreaking book, the nation's leading expert on predicting violent behavior unlocks the puzzle of human violence and shows that, like every creature on earth, we have within us the ability to predict the harm others might do us and get out of its way. Contrary to popular myth, human violence almost always has a discernible motive and is preceded by clear warning signs.

Revisado: 08-31-24
I rarely tell everyone and anyone about a single topic. But I know this book is mandatory for everyone to know. I like that it doesn’t insight, beer, for me. But it opens my mind to trust my instinct. And not live my life in fear.but to keep my eyes open and be aware and be ready when it comes time to react. I’m going to read this book again and again to keep me and all that I know safe. This is an excellent read.

I've seen it all.... A boy who planned to be the next school shooter. A patient with OCD whose loved ones really did suffer every time he missed a ritual. A choir boy who claimed he was being molested - not by a priest - but by God Himself. A patient with PTSD who gave me nightmares. A husband and wife who accused each other of abuse, and only one of them was telling the truth.
