Historia
From Louisa May Alcott's beloved classic Little Women, Geraldine Brooks has animated the character of the absent father, March, and crafted a story "filled with the ache of love and marriage and with the power of war upon the mind and heart of one unforgettable man" (Sue Monk Kidd). With "pitch-perfect writing" (USA Today), Brooks follows March as he leaves behind his family to aid the Union cause in the Civil War. His experiences will utterly change his marriage and challenge his most ardently held beliefs.

I didn’t care for the reader of this story. He was too naive even for a do good minister.

Somewhat tedious
Revisado: 11-18-23
This period of history was very interesting but I found the narrative a bit long and tedious. I suppose having the narrator a boy who dressed as a girl with unique but I found it boring.

Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Repetitious
Revisado: 10-04-23
While reading this book, I could predict the next tragedy. It was almost funny. But the author does physically describe a part of the world that is different. Also, he is good at describing the social relations within families & to outsiders.

Historia
Drawing on years of investigation and Anne Lister’s five-million-word secret journal, Learned by Heart is the long-buried love story of Eliza Raine, an orphan heiress banished from India to England at age six, and Anne Lister, a brilliant, troublesome tomboy, who meet at the Manor School for young ladies in York in 1805 when they are both fourteen. Emotionally intense, psychologically compelling, and deeply researched, Learned by Heart is an extraordinary work of fiction by one of the world’s greatest storytellers.

Tedious
Revisado: 09-02-23
I found this book to be long and it required an effort to read it. Despite the young woman’s tale of being a British orphan with brown skin (from India) and being wealthy but totally alone, I could not empathize with this character. I will avoid future books by this author.

Historia
In 1950s Dublin, Rosa Jacobs, a young history scholar, is found dead in her car. Renowned pathologist Dr. Quirke and DI St. John Strafford begin to investigate the death as a murder, but it’s the victim’s older sister Molly, an established journalist, who discovers a lead that could crack open the case. One of Rosa’s friends, it turns out, is from a powerful German family that arrived in Ireland under mysterious circumstances shortly after World War II. But as Quirke and Strafford close in, their personal lives may put the case—and everyone involved—in peril, including Quirke’s own daughter.

Sexual Prowess
Revisado: 07-12-23
Banville is an excellent writer and storyteller but I thought he was a bit heavy handed in writing about the sex with Jewesses. Almost like Rebecca in Ivanhoe. As a Jewish woman, I can tell you we’re like all other women. Appetites differ🤔

1969: the height of counterculture and the year universities would seek to curb the unruly spectacle of student protest; the winter that Harvard University would begin the tumultuous process of merging with Radcliffe, its all-female sister school; and the year that Jane Britton, an ambitious 23-year-old graduate student in Harvard's Anthropology Department and daughter of Radcliffe Vice President J. Narcissistic Authir
Revisado: 06-08-21
The author of this book interwove her thoughts and feelings about herself to the detriment of this nonfiction story. Her description of the Harvard professors who pursued sex in exchange for good references was interesting but not surprising. The book would have been ten times better if Becky Cooper didn’t write so much about herself. I, sincerely believe it’s a waste of time to read this book.
