Historia
Detective Sergeant Chris Waters got the call at 05.29 that July morning. This is it, said DCI Reeve, you'll be first there, it's all yours, you're the crime scene manager. Suddenly, after months of waiting and wondering, Waters finds himself in at the deep end, and alone at the scene of a puzzling murder. As the investigation proceeds, the detectives at Kings Lake Central find themselves visiting familiar places and talking to some familiar faces, while old enmities reappear in the incident room. Before this is over, Chris Waters will need to make a career-changing decision.

Mostly good
Revisado: 11-15-24
Not going to spoil it but I saw the solution to one of the subplots many chapters before this elite team did. I tend to want my book detectives to be relatively intelligent so it was frustrating to wait for them to hit in the obvious. I’m sure their denseness was just to pad the book but still.

Historia
By the 1890s, Wilmington was North Carolina’s largest city and a shining example of a mixed-race community. It was a bustling port city with a burgeoning African American middle class and a Fusionist government of Republicans and Populists that included black aldermen, police officers, and magistrates. There were successful black-owned businesses and an African American newspaper, The Record. But across the state - and the South - white supremacist Democrats were working to reverse the advances made by former slaves and their progeny.

A terrible part of our history
Revisado: 08-24-24
This was well-researched, well written, and nicely read. And I hated nearly every minute of it, especially knowing that my family was almost certainly doing similar awful things in Georgia. It is history we should all know but it’s hard to take at times. What really scares me is that we still have people espousing those beliefs and whipping up crowds with similar lies. And there are still too few voices calling out the lies for what they are.

Historia
In the late summer of 1943, when Italy broke with the Germans and joined the Allies after suffering catastrophic military losses, an Italian Resistance was born. Four young Piedmontese women - Ada, Frida, Silvia and Bianca - living secretly in the mountains surrounding Turin, risked their lives to overthrow Italy’s authoritarian government. They were among the thousands of Italians who joined the Partisan effort to help the Allies liberate their country from the German invaders and their Fascist collaborators.

Male narrator?

I can’t criticize his performance but it seems odd for a book written by a woman about women would be narrated by a man.

Interesting but…
Revisado: 08-25-22
I really liked the details of this story and the way it was incorporated into Japanese and Samurai history. However I have a real problem with nonfiction books that purport to know what someone was thinking. This happens throughout this story and to me was a distraction.

I was glad someone else commented that these got much better after the prologue book or I would have stopped listening right there. The next two were quite enjoyable. Perhaps not the greatest mysteries to ever come along but fun light entertainment.

Historia
Inheritance is an audiobook about secrets - secrets within families, kept out of shame or self-protectiveness; secrets we keep from one another in the name of love. It is the story of a woman's urgent quest to unlock the story of her own identity, a story that has been scrupulously hidden from her for more than 50 years, years she had spent writing brilliantly, and compulsively, on themes of identity and family history.

Better than expected
Revisado: 03-18-21
The other reviews almost stopped me from listening to this. Now that I have heard the whole book, I wonder if some of them bothered to finish it. Yes, the beginning is both emotionally fraught and somewhat off putting, even if true, but she works her way through this to a conclusion that is satisfactory, with a recognition of the places both her fathers had in her life.

Historia
From the author of Apocalyptic Planet, an unsparing, vivid, revelatory travelogue through prehistory that traces the arrival of the First People in North America 20,000 years ago and the artifacts that enable us to imagine their lives and fates. This book upends our notions of where these people came from and who they were.

Too much author
Revisado: 03-25-20
I really enjoyed the scientific part of this book and even occasionally thought that the connections to his own experience added. Most of the time though I just wanted to move past the current ramblings and get back to the past.

Historia
From the best-selling author of Assassination Vacation and Unfamiliar Fishes, a humorous account of the Revolutionary War hero Marquis de Lafayette - the one Frenchman we could all agree on - and an insightful portrait of a nation's idealism and its reality. Lafayette in the Somewhat United States is a humorous and insightful portrait of the famed Frenchman, the impact he had on our young country, and his ongoing relationship with instrumental Americans of the time.

Get someone else to narrate
Revisado: 06-09-19
I really like Sarah Vowell’s books but this is the first one I’ve done as audio. For someone reading her own book often about her own experiences, she is amazingly flat. I also didn’t care for the use of different voices for the quotes but I can see where that could appeal. But I’ll stick to reading her stories from now on.

When Matt Ballard was starting out his career, three boys were murdered in the same area, the remote and bleak Gibbet Fen. When the main suspect was killed in a hit-and-run, the killings stopped. But Matt was not satisfied that the real murderer had been caught. Over 25 years later, Matt gets a photo in an unmarked envelope. It's of the Gibbet Fen crime scene. And the picture was taken before the murder took place. More photos arrive, relating to the historic murders, as well as intimate pictures of Matt's very secret private life.

Really disappointing
Revisado: 05-13-19
I really like Joy Ellis’s works as a rule but this one just didn’t cut it. I found it completely unrealistic with plot twists that made no sense and some pretty poor police work in the middle. Then a sudden magic wand at the end and all is forgiven and everyone lives happily ever after.

Predictable story, painful accent
Revisado: 11-26-17
This was a reasonably satisfying light read, even if the story was totally predictable. The narrator’s version of a Boston accent was almost painful and the British accent was nonexistent.
