The mystery is solid, if not a little farfetched, but the performance elevates it. The narrator gives each character a distinctive voice and you can almost visualize the scenes. Very enjoyable listen.

Who is this Poirot?

The author had a perfectly logical resolution in her grasp, but chose the convoluted one as always. And even worse, who is this Poirot. Agatha Christie's Poirot has always been compassionate and empathetic even with his accurate moral compass. This one is sanctimonious, callous, cruel. Christie's Poirot's outfit is usually black and white. In Hannah's Poirot's case, the his morals and mind are black and white.

Being an avid Agatha Christie reader and a huge fan of all novels featuring Poirot, I gave The Monogram Murders a try, mostly out of nostalgia and I have to say I did not enjoy it. Still, I recognise it is no easy feat stepping into Dame Christie's shoes and it takes a while to find one's footing. I thought this second instalment by Sophie Hannah was a vast improvement. The plot is a lot less contrived and less overly dramatic and Edward Catchpool now has (just a little bit of) a sense o humor. Also, we get a glimpse of why he's employed as a detective in Scotland Yard (in the first book, he was the most incompetent detective ever, not just in comparison to Poirot). Hercule Poirot still feels a bit like Frankenstein's monster, a ressurected being that is not quite like his old self, but it's not simple to write this character like Christie did, with the perfect balance between ridiculous, brilliant, arrogant and tender. Julian Rhind-Tutt's performance is great and makes it all more enjoyable. I'd give the overall experience 3 and a half stars.

This is NOT Poirot

Though it's meant to pay homage to Agatha Christie, another author comes to mind: Mary Shelley. After his last appearance in "Curtain", Poirot is brought back to life by Ms. Hannah, but he feels like Frankenstein's monster. This is not Poirot, it's just something wearing his carcass. It would have been an enjoyable read, despite being too convoluted and unnecessarily dramatic, but the inclusion of Christie's famous sleuth (only in name and physical appearance, not in behavior) detracts from the experience.

Hugh Fraser's performance makes it all the more enjoyable! The story is entertaining, though not one of Christie's best. Still worth a listen

Not only is it not specially well written and awfully predictable, but it's full of clichés. (Minor spoiler ahead) Furthermore, it leans on the tired and harmful trope that links mental illness to violence, which is, I'm sorry, bulls**t and we should be over that by this day and age.

The performance is great, the plot is a little to contrived for my taste, but overall enjoyable
