Not bad, if you want a piece of fluff.
Revisado: 08-03-24
Where to begin? I picked up this book because the series is so deliriously popular, so I thought I'd give it a try. I was disappointed, to say the least. I was expecting a grand romance and high fantasy. What I got was a retelling of Beauty and the Beast in a fairly bland, generic "faerie" setting. The POV character's one-dimensional obsession with "colors and light" (usually in the context of how she'll never be good enough to paint it) overshadows all other senses, to the point that our main character, who is starving when we meet her, never actually bothers to notice what sort of "exquisite food" is in front of her.
The story really isn't bad, just predictable. I can't say I found anything particularly innovative or surprising in this book, which is fine for what it is. I was a bit let down, though, considering the hype.
I think the worst part for me was the editor's utter lack of ability to catch and correct the numerous malaphors in this book. I wish someone had explained to the author that bones don't bark, brows don't narrow, and "til the whites of her knuckles showed" makes no sense. Every time I encountered one of these nonsense phrases it took me completely out of the story.
Four stars for the narration, she did the best she could with what she had, but I'll be hearing her say the word "food" in my sleep for weeks.

Historia
When his mother became President, Alex Claremont-Diaz was promptly cast as the American equivalent of a young royal. Handsome, charismatic, genius—his image is pure millennial-marketing gold for the White House. There's only one problem: Alex has a beef with the actual prince, Henry, across the pond. And when the tabloids get hold of a photo involving an Alex-Henry altercation, U.S./British relations take a turn for the worse.

Way better than the movie
Revisado: 07-08-24
The narrator is overall really good. Excellent accent work. Just a couple of places where it feels like they maybe weren't sure about how a word is pronounced or what a certain song sounds like.
Truly engaging. If you're a fan of the movie you'll probably love this story. If you haven't seen the movie you'll probably still like it.

Great light fiction, imaginative and fun
Revisado: 06-30-24
This is a great piece of light fiction. Unusual magic system, pretty good writing, pretty good performance. I definitely enjoyed listening, and will probably get the rest of the series.

We were prepared for an earthquake. We had a flood plan in place. We could even have dealt with zombies. Probably. But no one expected the end to be quite so…sticky…or strawberry scented. Yahtzee Croshaw ( Mogworld, Zero Punctuation Reviews) returns to audiobooks with a follow-up to his smash-hit debut: Jam, a dark comedy about the one apocalypse no one predicted.

Nice light read, with some interesting twists.

Started out rather funny and fluffy, and if you're looking for a fairly quick diversion from heavier sci-fi, definitely give this a listen. The premise is interesting, and in the third act the story gets some pretty good twists and turns.

I would recommend this.
Revisado: 07-20-17
English narration is a bit awkward, certainly not the most natural style of narration I've ever heard. The German narration is fine.
The story is actually pretty good, and took a turn I was not expecting it to take. If you enjoy dystopian sci-fi you'll probably like this. The method of one German, one English chapter also helped a lot with my listening comprehension. Even if I didn't know what the words meant, I could still make out what they were.
