Historia
This ingenious novel is presented as a chronicle of an island from medieval to modern times. The island is not on the map, but it is real beyond doubt. It cannot be found in history books, yet the events are painfully recognizable. The monastic chroniclers dutifully narrate events they witness. The entries mostly seem objective, but at least one monk simultaneously drafts and hides a "true" history, to be discovered centuries later. And why has someone snipped out a key prophesy about the island's fate?

Ancient Christian cosmology.
Revisado: 06-30-23
An ancient Christian would recognize the universe as Lewis unfolds it. It's almost like what the modern person might consider to be mythology, but condescending to the level of those who can only accept science fiction. Lewis is deliberately presenting a universe where the material is also spiritual. Each star is an Angel, each planet has a spiritual hierarchy, and earth is the strange planet. As Lewis said in the conclusion:
"I feared that if the story were presented as fiction, readers might regard it as false... what we need for the moment is a body of people who are refamiliarized with certain ideas, and if 1% of our readers can make a change over from the concept of 'space' to the concept of 'the heavens,' we have made a beginning." This is a bookmark for us from just before secularism overwhelmed the paradigms of most western Christians.

Occult Feminism: The Secret History of Women's Liberation dives deep into the occult roots of the movement, detailing the lives of some of its most prominent figures and the esoteric beliefs that inspired and motivated them. Since the 1970s, everything we learn about the history of the women's movement has been subject to gatekeeping by radicals who run women's studies departments in universities. But there's an entire history that has been obscured from public view.

Read by a robot?
Revisado: 06-22-23
While the narrator could’ve been better, overall the book was exactly what I was hoping for. It seems that by accepting a secular, “neutral” take on history, the church has allowed itself to be made into the villain.

Historia
These are the words or sayings (Apophthegmata), of various monks (the abbas, i.e. fathers) who lived in the deserts of Egypt between 250 A.D. and 400 A.D. They cover topics such as love, poverty, fasting, humility, and prayer, and there is usually a short story that gives the context of the sayings. These sayings are one of the few surviving records of the first monks such as St. Anthony the Great and St. Pachomius, who followed a strict way of life. Their sole aim was to draw closer to God through their labours.

They lived such different, extreme, and difficult lives that I feel worse about my own righteousness and hopefully I will be more humble as a Christian.

In this intense detective thriller instilled with philosophical, religious, and social commentary, Dostoevsky studies the psychological impact upon a desperate and impoverished student when he murders a despicable pawnbroker, transgressing moral law to ultimately "benefit humanity".

One thing I did not expect to find in crime and punishment is a much more satisfying love story reminiscent of Les Miserables. The listener may be satisfied to compare and contrast the characters of Fantin and Sofia.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Misleading title
Revisado: 08-06-20
So I got this book thinking it would relate to conversational skills with new people, but it only does so from 30,000 feet. It’s more about the foundational assumptions we make when giving others the benefit of the doubt to strangers, and what happens when police departments don’t. -make sense? Needs a better title. Good book, great ideas, but meanderingly explained and stated. You’ll find yourself looking at the table of contents to wrestle for the rational framework. But once you hit the final chapters, it will all start falling into place.

Not too propagandistic, great historical story.
Revisado: 05-06-20
I'm a native American from this part of Oklahoma, and a conservative. The last thing I wanted was to pay for some grievance-industry type to stroke my hand while explaining how voting for their Christmas list will stop a White conspiracy from doing what's worst for everyone. But, the story itself took center-stage, while Grann's politics were simply piped-in through strategically selected worldviews of key characters as an effort to bolster their credibility with his modern audience. In short, its a great story, but not a full picture of how people thought back then, or even now. Not all the bad guys wear cowboy hats, and not all good guys wore feathers. The narration is the best I've heard yet, alternating according to presentation. The story was seemingly well written, researched, and a host of voices providing their prospective.

In this masterpiece, Solzhenitsyn has orchestrated thousands of incidents and individual histories into one narrative of unflagging power and momentum. Written in a tone that encompasses Olympian wrath, bitter calm, savage irony, and sheer comedy, it combines history, autobiography, documentary, and political analysis as it examines in its totality the Soviet apparatus of repression from its inception following the October Revolution of 1917.

I was amazed at the story and it's progression, but a little peeved at the narrator's perpetual cadence. If you like listening to a nasally, annoyed, "but we know better, don't we reader?" for hours on end, that won't bother you in the least.

In a scrap heap within an abandoned factory, the greatest invention in history lies dormant and unused. By what fatal error of judgment has its value gone unrecognized, its brilliant inventor punished rather than rewarded for his efforts? In defense of those greatest of human qualities that have made civilization possible, one man sets out to show what would happen to the world if all the heroes of innovation and industry went on strike.
