I knew this was going to be short, but this felt like there were scenes missing, particularly after returning to civilization. I spent too much time trying to figure out what I'd missed and it took me out of the story.

The narration was decent, but I didn't feel like either narrator was great at performing in the voice of the opposite gender. I have heard worse for certain though and 4 stars is still good.

So the graphic on the cover describes "A movie in your mind" and at first, the sound effects and cheesy music didn't bother me. I even was sort of enjoying the silliness of it. But about the time the first love scene happens, someone, somewhere made the choice to incorporate kissing and moaning sound effects, along with a cheesy pseudo 70s style adult-movie soundtrack.

It. Is. Uncomfortable.

Up until then, the acting performances were... okay overall, although there were some line reading choices I wondered about, but it was a solid three stars. After that, however, I'm not sure I'm going to be able to finish the book at this point to be able to tell you more about the plot. And for the record, I'm no prude. I generally have no problem listening to far raunchier scenes in audio format.

I wish I could return it, but apparently, I can't dislike more than one book in a certain arbitrary period of time and Audible's return policy won't allow me to. Trust me, whatever that other book I returned was, the kiss-into-the-microphone sound effects in this one were worse and I would take that one back just to get rid of this one.

A fated mate trope with werewolves. Honestly, the back of the book made this seem like more my style than it ended up being. The MMC and FMC saw each other when she was 14 and he was... I think... 24, realizing immediately who the other was. But due to the age difference, Mason didn't acknowledge her and continued his "relationship" with another woman for another 5 years. When they run into each other now that she's an adult, he wastes no time in correcting the issue.

Mason used the phrase "little one" ad nauseum to describe Sophia and it got super-obnoxious for a while. I also wasn't a huge fan of the way some of the scenes came from her perspective and then repeated themselves from his. If an author wants to write from both perspectives fine, but to repeat scenes like this? Just use third-person and write the story. Why does the reader have to read/listen to the same scene twice? Also, I didn't feel like the plot was all that strong. Mason was really myopic in a lot of ways he didn't need to be and continually hurt Sophia as a result. The most egregious was keeping the evil OW around that he's been sleeping with for 5 years after he finds Sophia. He doesn't sleep with the OW after he finds Sophia, but she's still his assistant. In what universe would your ex (as of one week ago), and a super-possessive one at that, still being your assistant be okay with your new partner?

I also didn't feel like the bad guy plot was as fleshed out as it should have been. I had to rewind the audio twice to figure out if I'd missed something. If your book is going to be erotica, fine (and this one definitely was), but if you're going to try to have a plot, put more effort in than this. Because yikes. Lots of sex, but no emotional payoff.

And oh my gosh was I glad to be done with it by the end. Hearing the term "Little One" as an endearment, but also an endearment that felt like it was every other sentence for Mason, made me want to tear my hair out. Note to authors: you don't have to have the a cute nickname for your characters, but if you do, it doesn't need to be the same one and it really doesn't need to be every other word out of the guy's mouth. And when it's during a love scene...? To infantilize someone you're having a big steamy love scene with is just... gross.

Also, I was a big fan of Matt Walton's voice for the male lead in general (yowsa, he has a great voice!), but I wish the intensity had been dialed back at times. As it was, he sounded like he was narrating action movie trailers for most of the book (and if that's not something he does, he definitely should), and there were times it was really distracting from the scene. I actually looked him up and he does some acting where he sounds very normal, so this made me think it was the director and not the actor. Either way, Mason was a bit much.

So no, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. I'd like to get my money back, but I did finish it, and I was warned by a plethora of one-star reviews on Goodreads, so I'm not sure I even deserve it.

I liked this but thought it would have been better as a short story. The story had some great dialogue but it all sort of dragged in the middle.

As for the narrator, she was okay but I thought she could have been better. I'll agree with other reviewers that there was very little distinction between her male voices, although personally I had no trouble determining when she was doing a male voice.

As awesome as the book was, the narrator made it even better. If you can get a copy of the audio, I highly recommend doing so. The narrator was perfect, injecting wit, sarcasm, and (heh) gravity into his performance but not letting it ever seem like he was performing. This was definitely my favorite audio of the year and I am so very glad I got it.

I really enjoyed this course. Professor Armstrong's enthusiasm for her subject is clear and I loved the little anecdotes she told from time to time. My only complaint was that I had hoped for more focus on the evolution of now-magical characters like Morgan LeFey and Merlin - especially after Armstrong mentioned earlier on in the course that LeFey wasn't originally an antagonist. I would have liked to hear more about the evolution of a female antagonist over the course of the centuries. The courses got a little bit less interesting for me when Armstrong began talking about the tapestries and paintings and when she got to he Renaissance where there was a dearth of material but picked up again when Arthur returned to the public consciousness in the Victorian era. I would absolutely listen to the speaker's other courses and look forward to her course about the middle ages.
