Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Don’t understand the hype
Revisado: 01-11-24
I have heard such good things about this book and author, but I just don’t see the draw. It was full of people who were either so self-centered they neglected those they claimed to love or they had a strange, undeserved devotion to the self-centered characters. The concept of the house being a central character was interesting, but it was too much ignored in the second half of the book. The only thing about the book I liked is how it showed the cycles our families live in.

Historia
As newspapers reported in the 1890s, a woman dubbed "Shakespeare" was found dead in a seedy hotel along the waterfront by Manhattan’s South Street Seaport. The chilling scene recalled for press and police alike Jack the Ripper’s victims in London. Panicked New Yorkers worked feverishly to halt that maniac’s spree from expanding across the Atlantic. The city only sighed relief after detectives abruptly arrested a traveling Algerian ex-soldier for the crime.

Fell short
Revisado: 12-28-23
This story had a lot of great potential. It was an interesting perspective, an unknown story and the chance to inform about a time in American/New York history that isn’t often highlighted. But it just didn’t work. The main character was so exaggerated and unbelievable as well as the coincidences that she found herself in. It was hard to follow the story because the author spent so much time filling it with “fluff” that could have been spent with better details or information.

Kept me guessing
Revisado: 12-27-23
I appreciated the twists and turns in this story. It kept me guessing throughout the book who the killer was, and while I was eventually able to figure out who the killer was, the circumstances were a great twist. The end started to drag on for a bit, otherwise this would have been 5 stars.

Historia
Adam Turner works the mid-dawn shift at his local radio station. From 12am to 6am, it’s his job to fill the airtime with old songs, inane chatter, and the occasional talkback caller. It’s a long way from his prime-time slot from over a decade ago, when he was a star in the making. Now there’s no producers, no billboards, no stakes, and not many listeners. His frequent callers are drunk students headed home from a night out, or long-range truck drivers. He is completely alone in the studio from midnight until dawn every night. And then one night at 12:45am, he gets a different kind of call.

Had me on the edge of my seat!
Revisado: 12-22-23
This has great suspense, creative storyline that kept me guessing and just enough clues to figure out “who done it” at the last minute so it wasn’t obvious all along, but was believable.

The Driver: Ahead he could see only the stretch of unending road, on either side brown-scorched plains of dirt and scrub, above it all a soaring blue sky and blinding sun. The Hitchhiker: Have you ever done something bad? The question was like a clawed hand seizing his guts. The Fugitive: She’d made a mistake. Wasn’t the first time and wouldn’t be the last. Ever since she’d left, all she’d found was more trouble.

Historia
If God is holy, then he can’t sin. If God can’t sin, then he can’t sin against you. If he can’t sin against you, shouldn’t that make him the most trustworthy being there is? Best-selling author Jackie Hill Perry, in her much anticipated follow-up to Gay Girl, Good God, helps us find the reason we don’t trust God - we misunderstand his holiness. In Holier Than Thou, Jackie walks us through Scripture, shaking the dust off of “holy” as we’ve come to know it and revealing it for what it really is: good news.

A soothing listen
Revisado: 06-19-22
I loved listening to Jackie read her book. The poetic rhythms brought out different emphasis than I might have noticed had I simply read it. Her writing was full of truth and conviction, yet came gently. The only thing I would have liked would have been more of her thinking and less quotes from others.

Just not there
Revisado: 06-02-22
There was a lot of storyline and personalities started, but it just never played out. An interesting concept, but it started so slow and ended so abruptly without really finishing.

Beautiful writing
Revisado: 09-10-21
A fabulous piece of historical fiction. This is a region I dont know much about during this time period, but this story makes me want to learn more! The author did a wonderful job of giving just enough cultural details (food, clothings, customs, buildings, relationships) to help the reader feel like they are there and can understand the culture without weighing down and detracting from the story. I cannot wait to read the 2nd book.

Historia
In 1948 most White people in the North had no idea how unjust and unequal daily life was for the 10 million African Americans living in the South. But that suddenly changed after Ray Sprigle, a famous White journalist from Pittsburgh, went undercover and lived as a Black man in the Jim Crow South. Escorted through the South's parallel Black society by John Wesley Dobbs, a historic Black civil rights pioneer from Atlanta, Sprigle met with sharecroppers, local Black leaders, and families of lynching victims.

Needed to be more concise

An interesting story, but the writer rambled quite a bit, repeated himself often, and did not focus the writing.

It’s officially booty o’clock, I’m alone again in my kitchen choking down a slice of terrible chocolate cake…and I’m pretty sure I just got drunk texted by the man I have a ginormous crush on. I’ve been daydreaming about Eliot Hoffman’s dimples for two months, and even though I’m sure this was a mistake on his end, it doesn’t mean it’s not an opportunity on mine. It’s the middle of the night, and I just wanna talk to him. So I text him back.

Definitely recommend.
Revisado: 08-03-21
I enjoyed this book so much I read it all in one sitting. I loved how the characters from the first book were included, but it wasn’t necessary to have read the first and Bastone didn’t feel the need to retell that story. The development of the characters was so in-depth, but so natural. Bastone did a great job of weaving in just enough clues at the right time to allow the reader to know who the mystery woman is.
