Evocative, gritty and heartbreakingly real.
Revisado: 01-04-25
I felt I was reliving my youth. Growing up in cane country in North Queensland, Maryrose captured the whole vibe of small towns. the characters, the undercurrents and suspicions and the naivety of the 1970s. She helped me relive the kerfuffle over the Little Red Schoolbook and our joy as young teens getting our hands on a copy. Her descriptions of the High school teachers were so much like many of the young teachers I encountered at highly school the my mind superimposed their faces on her characters. She also reminded me of the misogynistic attitudes, the suspicion of outsiders and closed minds of small towns to anyone new or different. With the parallel storylines of the characters and a cracking good mystery, it was a story that I couldn't turn off.

Good play, riveting story, sad ending

Sent shivers up this Queenslander's spine!
Revisado: 01-03-23
As I was a teenager in the 70s, this story was all too real. Also having spent my late teens living in Jandowae I was thrilled to hear the town name pronounced correctly ( even if Dalby was not quite how a local would say it!)
Was happy to hear a couple of my favourite "Harrow" actors in roles as well.

Historia
It is 1981. Glasgow is dying and good families must grift to survive. Agnes Bain has always expected more from life. She dreams of greater things: a house with its own front door and a life bought and paid for outright (like her perfect, but false, teeth). But Agnes is abandoned by her philandering husband, and soon she and her three children find themselves trapped in a decimated mining town. As she descends deeper into drink, the children try their best to save her, yet one by one they must abandon her to save themselves. It is her son Shuggie who holds out hope the longest.

It captured me
Revisado: 03-08-22
Sad, funny, despairing and hopeful the story had a cast of multidimensional characters, some quirky, but all very real, I became very invested in Shuggie and his family.
The narration was beautiful, easy to listen to and expressive.
The best book I have listened to this year.

Historia
Caroline Overington's stunning fiction debut is a multi-voiced novel centred around a child's death and its terrible repercussions. In 1982 Victorian police were called to a home on a housing estate an hour west of Melbourne. There, they found a five-year-old boy lying still and silent on the carpet. There were no obvious signs of trauma, but the child, Jacob, died the next day. The story made the headlines, and hundreds attended the funeral. Few people were surprised when the boy's mother and her boyfriend went to prison for the crime.

Gripping and heart wrenching
Revisado: 01-28-22
The story centres mostly around adult Lauren, the 6 year old sibling of a 5 year old boy killed after a bashing that his mother and her boyfriend as layer convicted for. Told as a series of anecdotes and reports from a number of viewpoints, we learn more about the tragic incident and the family, revealing the long reaching repercussions for all involved. This story is very realistic, often gut wrenching but not without a sense of hope.

Prodigal Summer weaves together three stories of human love within a larger tapestry of lives in southern Appalachia. At the heart of these intertwined narratives is a den of coyotes that have recently migrated into the region. Deanna Wolfe, a reclusive wildlife biologist, watches them from an isolated mountain cabin where she is caught off-guard by Eddie Bondo, a young hunter who comes to invade her most private spaces and her solitary life.

Loved it! I enjoyed how the women's stories wove together gradually as each one came to terms with the changes in her life. The humour and idiosyncrasies of the characters of small communities was one of the things I enjoyed most. An author reading their own work can be a risk, but I coukd listen to Barbara Kingsolver all day (And did!)

Historia
Northern Ireland, spring 1981. Hunger strikes, riots, power cuts, a homophobic serial killer with a penchant for opera, and a young woman’s suicide that may yet turn out to be murder: on the surface, the events are unconnected, but then things—and people—aren’t always what they seem. Detective Sergeant Duffy is the man tasked with trying to get to the bottom of it all. It’s no easy job—especially when it turns out that one of the victims was involved in the IRA but was last seen discussing business with someone from the loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force.

Gripping...just had to keep listening!
Revisado: 07-20-16
Gerard Doyle was a joy to listen to, I'll be looking for more stories he narrates.
Adrian McKinty's tale had me coming back for more, his mix of current events of the time, the politics of Northern Ireland in 1981 made this crime novel even more interesting. Looking forward to more Sean Duffy novels, I think I'm going to like him as much as Harry Bosch and Dave Robicheaux!
