Historia
Ireland, 1959: Young Christopher Hurley is a tinker, a Pavee gypsy, who roams with his father and extended family from town to town, carrying all their worldly possessions in their wagons. Christy carries with him a burden of guilt as well, haunted by the story of his mother’s death in childbirth. The wandering life is the only one Christy has ever known, but when his grandfather dies, everything changes. His father decides to settle briefly, in a town, where Christy and his cousin can receive proper schooling and prepare for their first communions.

Meaning of home & family
Revisado: 05-14-24
I enjoyed the spot on literal understanding of 12 year old boys and the relationships of family and friends to unpack. Chuckles sprinkled throughout. The boundaries folks live within for their own lives and the lives of their children and that those are not the same. There is discovery, love, hope and sadness. Christy’s horse, Jack being a representation of boyhood and then Jack’s death, even with the foreshadow, was an unwelcome event in my brain. Definitely recommend.

Gender reputation rules
Revisado: 04-30-24
Listening to the book is a reminder of the past huge societal differences between men and women in regard to having a child out of wedlock. The strength of women coming together to care for children when their father wants them to disappear. As well as women’s rights to inherit or own property and have a say in who they marry, These close female relationships drastically change everyone’s lives for the better.

Historia
Young Cally is an apprentice within the most unusual order of sorcerers in the known world: the only one that forbids its members from using their powers to kill. Despite his lowly status, Cally's chosen by the Master of the Order to join a delegation to see their allies the Lannovians. The meeting will be historic: 60 years ago, the Order's enemies attacked them with a host of demons, forcing the Order to trap the monsters inside their own citadel and seal it shut with impenetrable wards. The trick worked so well the Order hasn't been able to get it back open since.

A kid that figures it out
Revisado: 03-28-24
I enjoy listening to the voice of the narrator. The story has some dark bits, but all stories with rites of passage have that. The main character has to navigate right from wrong and everything in between as it challenges all he’s been told growing up in the sorcerers order. I enjoyed that he knew he didn’t know everything and wasn’t afraid to forge ahead anyway.

The importance of literature during war
Revisado: 02-28-24
I love listening to this narrator, Saskia Maarleveld. Her voice is smooth and I can easily differentiate the characters. The author gives prominence to the bravery of those who have lived in conflict of varying degrees for years of their lives. The strength needed to move forward when loved ones are taken from them. The book creates the awareness of the importance of literature and art in times when familiar culture is being threatened.

Maddie & Will save the day again!
Revisado: 10-06-23
This is another interesting adventure for Maddie and Will involving some magic. Will comes up with the plans to get the necromancer, demon & dire wolf at their own game, but Maddie with quick thinking actually saves the day when the plans go awry. Another entertaining story showing Will’s guidance and Maddie’s maturity.

Excellent in every way
Revisado: 06-23-23
The performance establishing each character as their unique selves perfectly was more than a pleasure to hear. Following the many mysteries embedded in this tale knowing that there will be more to follow is a joy. Holmes is so much the opposite of society ladies of the time period making her diversity captivating. I enjoyed that her partners in crime solving grew to a fascinating group each with their own peculiarities.

Always a mystery
Revisado: 06-15-23
The performance was perfect. Love all the quirky characters. The mystery, as always, is being worked out ahead of the listener behind the scenes. Meaning that there is always more to the case than what is being revealed to the listener as all the pieces come together. Enjoyed the book immensely.

Loved the intrigue!
Revisado: 05-18-23
I expected the “bad guy” to be someone Elsie was close to and was relieved when that person wasn’t actually bad because of her close connection to him since her own family had abandoned her as a child.
