Historia
Jessica Carew Kraft, an urban wife and mom of two, was rooted in the modern world, complete with a high-powered career in tech and the sneaking suspicion that her lifestyle was preventing her and her family from truly thriving. Determined to find a better way, Jessica quit her job and set out to learn about "rewilding" from people who reject the comforts and convenience of civilization by using ancient tools and skills to survive. Along the way, she found an entire community walking the path back from our technology-focused, anxiety-ridden way of life to a simpler, more human experience.

I wanted to love this DNF
Revisado: 12-24-24
As much as I wanted to finish this and wanted to love it, I could not. I grew up in the Bay area in California and also have a masters in anthropology. I agree with much of the fundamental perspective change you had, from a sedentary and solitary nuclear lifestyle to one of outdoor, collective and primal needs. However, my issues are with the underlying and privileged tones throughout your story. You were able to quit your job, because your ex husband continued to slave away at what you would consider a soul-crushing attorney career. You were taking trips and making meaningful connections with other men while he afforded you the basic needs of paying the mortgage, proving you and your children health care and likely paying for all other necessary costs. Growing up in this area, I know the home you lived in cost anywhere from 1.5-2 million and although I commend your willingness to put yourself in harder situations, coming home to high-end, liberal, and PC Berkely is not living in the truth of what you are writing about. I wish you the best in your rewilding story, but it's just that, your story. Most of us are not afforded the same opportunities or privileges of choosing to live this life.

Too long and way too much
Revisado: 03-06-22
There were multiple instances in which this would have concluded nicely, however, the author kept going. This was far too long and almost painful towards the end. Not to mention, one depressing thing after another.

Historia
Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli. By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Elsa must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family.

Misleading Message
Revisado: 03-20-21
I think we can all agree that the daughter is the least likeable character in this story-line. She refuses to take responsibility for her actions and blames everyone else (specifically her mother) for everything that happens negative in their lives. It's not surprising that the least likable character introduces communism to the story as a positive escape from their current condition. Thanks for sexualizing and glamorizing communism with use of specific characters but also not addressing the obvious, her Italian grandparents left Italy in the 20's for a REASON. Maybe the story could have bothered to address why they were so focused on being Americans, it's because they suffered under extreme government control and that is neither sexy nor is it glamorous. This is capitalism, supply and demand, if their is no demand then you change your supply. The land owners were crooks, absolutely, so you leave. Many of the migrants came with nothing, they can also leave with nothing. Like the character from South Carolina stated "can you believe we left a place where you can fish your supper, for this place, the land of milk and honey they said". They left because they wanted to improve their lives, and when those lives didn't improve, you can always leave. Communism is not the answer, I think any Venezuelan can attest to this fact.

Historia
More than half a century ago, the naturalist Farley Mowat accepted an assignment to investigate why wolves were killing Arctic caribou. Mowat’s account of the summer he lived in the frozen tundra alone – studying the wolf population and developing a deep affection for these wild creatures (who were no threat to caribou or man) – is today celebrated as a classic of nature writing, at once a tale of remarkable adventure and an indelible record of the myths and magic of wolves.

Historia
Todd Hewitt is the only boy in a town of men. Ever since the settlers were infected with the Noise germ, Todd can hear everything the men think, and they hear everything he thinks. Todd is just a month away from becoming a man, but in the midst of the cacophony, he knows that the town is hiding something from him - something so awful Todd is forced to flee with only his dog, whose simple, loyal voice he hears too. With hostile men from the town in pursuit, the two stumble upon a strange and eerily silent creature: a girl. Who is she?

Not a pick me up
Revisado: 03-07-21
If you enjoy being beaten up, this is your book! Well read and great performance but Jesus, one bad thing after another, it became redundant. It's not that I think life is bubbles and rainbows but it was predictably bad with "bad guys" at every single corner my God!

Historia
In Eat and Run, Scott Jurek opens up about his life and career - as an elite athlete and a vegan - and inspires runners at every level. From his Midwestern childhood hunting, fishing, and cooking for his meat-and-potatoes family, to his early beginnings in running (he hated it), to his slow transition to ultrarunning and veganism, to his world-spanning, record-breaking races, Scott's story shows the power of an iron will and blows apart all the stereotypes of what athletes should eat to fuel optimal performance.
