Wonderful book, narration poor

This is a wonderful book, however, the narration is difficult to listen to, mainly because the reader doesn't breath frequently enough, and the ends of long phrases are read without adequate power, leading to a change in pitch and breathy vocal quality.

Not David Sedaris, don't narrate your own book

I have not finished listening and don't think I will. It seem to be an intriguing book. I am going to download it to my Kindle and read it. The author's narration is terrible. I blame Audible for spoiling me with so many gifted, wonderful audio book readers. One of them probably would have made this novel soar.

Beautiful book, but must enclose a warning

This is a wonderful novel which contains long descriptions of childhood sexual and physical abuse. It is a book of redemption and love, and the suffering described is not gratuitous, but nonetheless is painful to read.

I love Sherlock Holmes stories, but could not bear the narrator's voicing for Dr. Watson, and, after several attempts, deleted the book without listening to more than the first fifteen minutes. I wish I had listened to the audio sample first.

Back story annoying and intrusive

I listen to Nevada Barr books mostly because I enjoy Anna Pidgeon. This book is actually two novels in one, and I did not care for the story which was interwoven with the mystery which Anna was unraveling. Actually, I fast forwarded through the second story, and it was annoying to have to find my place again every half hour or so, as the two stories alternated.
