really smacks you in the face
Revisado: 07-15-22
The theme of the book is very challenging to a white Christian like myself. I have often struggled to reconcile my own adherence to Christianity in the face of daily revelations of the church's complicity in, and often in support of, barbarism. I cannot count the times I've had Christ's words ring in my head, "These people worship with their lips, but their heart is far from me"
Equally, I have struggled with how the slaves, and later, the Jim Crow African Americans managed to maintain their faith to a religion that openly supported white supremacists, to a God that allowed white supremacy to continue.
The author addresses both of these questions admirably.
I also feel somewhat justified in my own belief that the gospel is only an opiate administered to the suffering to lessen their pain when it is preached without concrete works to end their suffering.
The narration was great as well.

Historia
America after the Civil War was a land of shattered promises and entrenched hatreds. In the explosive South, danger took many forms: white extremists loyal to a defeated world terrorized former slaves, while in the halls of government, bitter and byzantine political warfare raged between Republicans and Democrats.

Charles Lane does a super job of presenting this Massacre as not only a horrifying instance in American history but also as a groundbreaking legal precedent that has haunted our nation ever since. It was truly spooky to read the events and headlines of the reconstruction era and wake up daily reading the same in my morning paper. We've been here before. I wonder, are we going to kowtow to the supremacists again?

Historia
In the summer after graduating from college, Suleika Jaouad was preparing, as they say in commencement speeches, to enter “the real world”. She had fallen in love and moved to Paris to pursue her dream of becoming a war correspondent. The real world she found, however, would take her into a very different kind of conflict zone. It started with an itch - first on her feet, then up her legs, like a thousand invisible mosquito bites. Then a trip to the doctor and, a few weeks shy of her 23rd birthday, a diagnosis: leukemia, with a 35 percent chance of survival.

I picked this book so that I might improve my ability to empathize and speak to cancer sufferers. Suleika Jaouad does a beautiful job of painting the mind of a cancer patient on the front end and back side of treatment and all the places between. Additionally, her narration drifts through the treatise like a cool summer breeze. I honestly believe I could listen to her discuss building codes and be mesmerized.

Historia
A lifelong pursuit of knowing God should embody the Christian's existence. According to eminent theologian J.I. Packer, however, Christians have become enchanted by modern skepticism and have joined the "gigantic conspiracy of misdirection" by failing to put first things first. Knowing God aims to redirect our attention to the simple, deep truth that to know God is to love His Word.

Good book for someone new to the faith
Revisado: 03-02-21
Most of what JI Packer discusses is a rehash of what has been said before. His explanation of why it was necessary for Christ to die on the cross was original and and made the whole book a worthwhile adventure.

Historia
In 1956, toward the end of Reverend John Ames's life, he begins a letter to his young son, an account of himself and his forebears. Ames is the son of an Iowan preacher and the grandson of a minister who, as a young man in Maine, saw a vision of Christ bound in chains and came west to Kansas to fight for abolition: He "preached men into the Civil War", then, at age 50, became a chaplain in the Union Army, losing his right eye in battle.

Historia
What can the call to discipleship, the adherence to the word of Jesus, mean today to the businessman, the soldier, the laborer, or the aristocrat? What did Jesus mean to say to us? What is his will for us today? Drawing on the Sermon on the Mount, Dietrich Bonhoeffer answers these timeless questions by providing a seminal reading of the dichotomy between "cheap grace" and "costly grace."

Wingspread is the biography of A.B. Simpson, written by A.W. Tozer. A pastor and missionary, Simpson's work became what is now the Christian and Missionary Alliance, a denomination characterized by its Christ-centered teaching and emphasis on missions. Simpson's influence saw a convergence of Calvinistic doctrine with the holiness movements of the late 19th century.

Great book about an enlightened man of God, written by an equally enlightened man of God. Tozer's matter of fact style of writing and vivid description of an inspired life is a stinging rebuke of the counterfeit faith that dominates the
modern church.

Historia
From the perspective of an unbeliever, Fear and Trembling explores the paradox of faith, the nature of Christianity, and the complexity of human emotion. Kierkegaard examines the biblical story of Abraham, who was instructed to sacrifice his son Isaac, and forces us to consider Abraham's state of mind. What drove Abraham, and what made him carry out such an absurd and extreme request from God? Kierkegaard argues that Abraham's agreement to sacrifice Isaac, and his suspension of reason, elevated him to the highest level of faith.

Graham Greene explores corruption and atonement in this penetrating novel set in 1930s Mexico during the era of Communist religious persecutions. As revolutionaries determine to stamp out the evils of the church through violence, the last Roman Catholic priest is on the lam, hunted by a police lieutenant. Despite his own sense of worthlessness—he is a heavy drinker and has fathered an illegitimate child—he is determined to continue to function as a priest until captured.
