Historia
Priscilla “Hutch” Hutchins discovers an interstellar message from a highly advanced race that could be her last chance for a mission before the program is shut down for good. Hutch has been the academy’s best pilot for decades. She’s had numerous first contact encounters and even became a minor celebrity. But world politics have shifted from exploration to a growing fear that the program will run into an extraterrestrial race more advanced than humanity and war.

Pretty good story, frustrating characters
Revisado: 03-13-24
I love the Hutchins series but in this one, more than any other, I got frustrated with the main character and others. It's really frustrating to listen to Priscilla Hutchins, hero of mankind, just let herself get berated by people like she's still some rookie.

Historia
Priscilla "Hutch" Hutchins has finally realized her lifelong dream: She’s completed a nerve-bending qualification flight for a pilot’s license. Her timing is far from optimal, however. Faster-than-light travel has only recently become a reality, and the World Space Authority is still learning how to manage long-range missions safely. To make matters worse, efforts to prepare two planets for colonization are killing off native life-forms, outraging people on Earth. So there’s not a lot of demand for space pilots.

Good but not a 'can't miss'
Revisado: 03-12-24
I enjoy nearly all of Mcdevitt 's stories because they are generally easy listening and entertaining. I enjoyed this book but it felt unnecessary. Not at all his best.

In an unprecedented first, Earth sends a message to Mogwa Prime. Unfortunately, the messenger is not met with enthusiasm. Misunderstandings soon threaten all of Humanity. Forced to prove Earth can serve the Empire better than any rival, McGill does his best. Eager to prove our worth to the Galactics, the frontier war between Rigel and Earth is expanded to Storm World. Circled by six moons, the planet is ravaged by wild storms and tides. Battles are fought in raging hurricanes, and death stalks the soldiers on both sides.

Series starting to fall flat
Revisado: 04-22-20
I have thoroughly enjoyed this series for a long time. But I am really struggling now to enjoy this book. McGill hasn't evolved as a character one bit in 10 books. It's getting tiresome. The same interactions are happening over and over. The same pig-headed decisions on his part that he should have learned from years ago. It's not compelling anymore. It's actually hard to stomach when he does something so utterly stupid just to create drama in the story. And even then, there are times his mistakes could be easily corrected. Starting to see glaring plot holes. This will probably be my last listen to James McGill.

Long has he lived in the shadow of his more favoured primarch brothers, frustrated by the mundane and ignominious duties which regularly fall to his Legion. When Fulgrim offers him the chance to lead an expedition in search of ancient and destructive xenos weaponry, the Iron Warriors and the Emperor's Children unite and venture deep into the heart of the great star maelstrom that haunts Perturabo's dreams.

Historia
Removed from the concerns of the galaxy at large and regarding the Warmaster's unfolding Heresy with cold detachment, he has dedicated his hollow existence to the preservation of all the knowledge once held in the great libraries of Tizca, should mankind ever seek such enlightenment again. But his sons can see the change in their primarch - he is a broken soul whose mind and memories are slipping away into the tumult of the warp.

Historia
For too long had the Vth Legion ranged out beyond the sight of the wider Imperium, remaining ignorant of the Warmaster's rebellion and the war that inevitably followed. Only once their primarch, Jaghatai Khan, had satisfied himself that the path before them was just and true did the White Scars choose a side, taking the fight to the traitors on every front.

Historia
They hunt us. They bomb our worlds for target practice. A star cluster in the constellation of Orion rotates once every 1,000 years. Those who rule there have an ancient tradition: When each cycle ends, they train their fleets by spilling the blood of lesser beings. The enemy fleets are coming again. In response, the Rebel Worlds gather their starships to face the terrifying threat, and this time humanity is asked to stand with them. The last time they considered Earth, Vikings in longboats were raiding English coastlines. Today, we're less primitive. Today, we're a target.

Starting to feel formulaic
Revisado: 11-21-17
I have been a huge fan of BV Larson but his books are starting to sound the same. Part of that us having to same narrator read all of his books. Mark Boyett is great. But once you have heard him read over 10 novels by the same guy it is starting to get stale. If you are new to BV Larson you will enjoy this book and most likely the rest of the series. If you are a BV Larson veteran.... skip it.

The story felt drawn out a few times and the journey may set you up for a bit of a let down at the end. I still enjoyed the listen and don't regret spending the 1 credit.
