Historia
Most people were blissfully unaware that England was overrun by dragons. Only those born with preternatural hearing could hear and converse with dragonkind, and even those rarely came into their hearing before they were fifteen. It was not Elizabeth’s fault that she discovered the truth about dragons when she was only four years-old. It was also not Elizabeth’s fault that the old tatzelwurm, Rumblkins, who lived in the woods near Longbourn House befriended her.

Historia
Yesterday, the Star Kingdom of Manticore was a small, unimportant interstellar backwater. A quiet little star nation, only recently recovered from the devastating blow of the Plague Years. More affluent than some, perhaps, but with little to attract trade or interstellar commerce, it had little need for a navy...and even less interest in paying for one. But Manticore has now become a target. The Star Kingdom isn't certain who is attacking it, or why, or what its mysterious foe can possibly want, but Queen Elizabeth I knows she has to find out.

A favorite series that continues to build in depth
Revisado: 03-07-23
The story is seriously enjoyable to follow and continual character development endears it to the reader. The narrator is balanced and does a variety of voices/accents well. I appreciate that the content is clean (other than a lot of swearing).
My teens and I listened again to the first three in the series before starting this audiobook. This really helped as we followed the flow of the story, however relistening to the series isn’t necessary to enjoy this book. A listener may have to overlook a few references or tie ins, if it’s been a couple years since reading the previous books. The general plot is building, but the main story in the book is unique, and so can be followed well enough to enjoy it. There are some reminders of people and events that the authors have included throughout the book. But really, there’s insufficient time for a total “refresh” of the story -and honestly too much refresh would be frustrating to readers who are tracking already.
Highly recommended. We are anticipating the next, A Call to … , in the series! A definite favorite in our audio library!

Narrator made the story mor engaging
Revisado: 01-16-23
I picked the physical book up a few years ago and put it down because it was difficult for me to get into the story. Recently, after hearing rave reviews of the saga, I tried the audio version. It was an excellent decision.
Two things of note concerning the audio:
1. (Narration) The author narrates and does a fabulous job of making the humor come off as intended, as well as creating strikingly, endearing characters. I like the way he doesn’t overdo female voices. His characters’ voicing is unique & easy to distinguish one character from another.
2.(Writing Style) The beginning sets the stage, and the style of writing changes a bit as the story progresses. I enjoyed this story immensely and am looking forward to continuing the series.

Historia
For thousands of years, the Chiss Ascendancy has been an island of calm, a center of power, and a beacon of integrity. It is led by the Nine Ruling Families, whose leadership stands as a bulwark of stability against the Chaos of the Unknown Regions. But that stability has been eroded by a cunning foe who winnows away trust and loyalty in equal measure. Bonds of fidelity have given way to lines of division among the families. Despite the efforts of the Expansionary Defense Fleet, the Ascendancy slips closer and closer to civil war.

Seriously! What an ending….
Revisado: 01-03-22
As the conclusion approached, I wondered how Zahn was going to write an ending to this long story. Ha! Bravo…and encore!
And of course Marc Thompson is the true star of the show. Take a bow! I still miss the original Thrawn voicing though.

Why we think it’s a great listen: It’s easy to say that when it comes to sci-fi you either love it or you hate it. But with Ender’s Game, it seems to be you either love it or you love it.... The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway for almost as long. Enter Andrew "Ender" Wiggin, the result of decades of genetic experimentation.

Crude Humor Got in the Way of Story
Revisado: 11-13-21
Didn't even want to finish the book because of the crude humor. It really detracted from the story. Disappointed.

In times of war, the Cobras are necessary, yet in times of peace they are often reviled by those they have saved. Zahn is getting really good at closing a book to a satisfying end, while making the reader impatient for the next book. Well played. Looking forward to seeing how he wraps up this trilogy.

Caution: Like potato chips, you can’t just stop at one.
Revisado: 03-12-20
This is possibly the best book in the series yet! Zahn is definitely a seasoned author by this point. But I would definitely recommend reading/listening to the earlier books in the series first- and in order. There are characters that you get to know throughout the books, including their actions/history. To jump in mid-stream may be hard to follow. Zahn’s character development is a strength, and also his ability to flip the story in a very realistic way. I like the narrator.

Nice ending...and next beginning
Revisado: 03-10-20
No spoilers. As I was listening to this book, I was thinking how much I enjoyed following a family storyline. We are now into the third generation. Very interesting read. Only down side (which is a bit of an up): I found it difficult to sometimes follow all the different storylines that Zahn was threading together. But that will make for an interesting second time around read. On to the next Cobra Trilogy.

Historia
When the colony worlds Adirondack and Silvern fell to the Troft forces almost without a struggle. Outnumbered and on the defensive, Earth made a desperate decision. It would attack the aliens not from space, but on the ground with forces the Trofts did not even suspect. Thus were created the Cobras, a guerilla force whose weapons were surgically implanted, invisible to the unsuspecting eye, yet undeniably deadly. And the Moreau family were the most famous of the Cobra warriors.

Glad I don’t have to wait for the next in series. Also, the narrator seems to be getting comfortable in the roll. I like listening to the balance he strikes in reading with both ease of listening and expression.

Very intriguing plot line. Looking forward to the next in series! I can see the growth in Zahn, as a writer, between the gap years of the first three and this book! Still... the back story of the first trilogy really brought depth to this book.
