Historia
Sergeant Charles Windolph was the last white survivor of the Battle of Little Big Horn when he told his story nearly 70 years later. A six-year veteran in the Seventh Cavalry, Windolph rode in the 1873 Yellowstone Expedition, and the 1874 Black Hills Expedition. He fought in Captain Benteen's troops on the fatal Sunday, and vividly recalls the battle that wiped out Custer's command. Equally vivid is the evidence marshaled by historians Frazier and Robert Hunt.

Excellent Story, Narration A Bit Cringe
Revisado: 04-29-25
A critical memoir of Charles Windolph, often mentioned as Captain Frederick Benteen’s favorite soldier in H Company, 7th Cavalry. The story is essential reading for any Indian Wars student. For me, personally, the decision of the narrator to attempt to sound like an old man is cartoonish, unnecessary, and even takes away from the story.

Historia
The Great Sioux War of 1876-77 began at daybreak on March 17, 1876, when Colonel Joseph J. Reynolds and six cavalry companies struck a village of Northern Cheyennes - Sioux allies - thereby propelling the Northern Plains tribes into war. The ensuing last stand of the Sioux against Anglo-American settlement of their homeland spanned some 18 months, playing out across more than 20 battle and skirmish sites and costing hundreds of lives on both sides and many millions of dollars. And it all began at Powder River.

Excellent History, Performance Needs Editing
Revisado: 05-12-24
This is a superb history of an oft-skipped over event that has needed illumination for a very long time. Really a great history. There are several points, however, especially towards the end, that the audio editors missed, which can really throw the focus off of the material.

Historia
David M. Potter's Pulitzer Prize-winning The Impending Crisis is the definitive history of antebellum America. Potter's sweeping epic masterfully charts the chaotic forces that climaxed with the outbreak of the Civil War: westward expansion, the divisive issue of slavery, the Dred Scott decision, John Brown's uprising, the ascension of Abraham Lincoln, and the drama of Southern secession.

This is a work of research so immense that it can be exhausting and overwhelming at times. Yet, it is still astonishingly digestible. I've been a Civil War buff all my life, but this book has shed light on the conflict in a way I've never before experienced.

Historia
The United States emerged from the American Revolution still engaged in old world politics. In particular, America faced all the trade restrictions of the British Navigation Acts. As a result, The United States declared war on Great Britain in 1812, and proceeded to invade Canada, one of Britain's possessions, an invasion which failed. At a cost of $80 million in national debt and of a single party assuming almost unchallenged power, the War of 1812 has been called "America's most unpopular war".

Good Book
Revisado: 09-20-23
On the whole, it’s a good bird’s eye view of the subject matter. While it does a great job in explaining what led to the war, it passes over the war itself at perhaps too high an altitude, but still has much to offer on the subject.

Historia
The Battle of New Orleans sets its scenes with an almost unbelievably colorful cast of characters - a happenstance coalition of militia-men, regulars, untrained frontiersmen, free blacks, Indians, townspeople, and of course, Jackson himself. His glorious, improbable victory will catapult a once-poor, uneducated orphan boy into the White House and forge the beginning of a true nation.

Historia
Before the ink was dry on the U.S. Constitution, the establishment of a permanent military had become the most divisive issue facing the new government. Would a standing army be the thin end of dictatorship? Would a navy protect American commerce against the Mediterranean pirates, or drain the treasury and provoke hostilities with the great powers? The founders, particularly Jefferson, Madison, and Adams, debated these questions fiercely and switched sides more than once.

Historia
In The Righteous Mind, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt explores the origins of our divisions and points the way forward to mutual understanding. His starting point is moral intuition - the nearly instantaneous perceptions we all have about other people and the things they do. These intuitions feel like self-evident truths, making us righteously certain that those who see things differently are wrong. Haidt shows us how these intuitions differ across cultures, including the cultures of the political left and right.

Historia
When you think about Christian history, you might think of the first thousand years - the events of Jesus' life, the acts of the apostles, the establishment of the church, and the various councils that established theological doctrine. But the history of Christianity from the Reformation to the present is equally dramatic and profoundly relevant. It's a story about people as much as theology - our cultures, our politics, our relationship to the world.

Good Overall, But Presenter Just Can’t Help Herself…
Revisado: 01-14-23
Overall, this is a good resource on the church following the Reformation. I will compliment her attempts to curb her own political and ideological biases and to present both sides of any given tension between theological positions, but she falls short with her apparent enthusiasm for the theological left and contempt for the theological right. Given her status in modern academia, this should be anything but a surprise, but it is important to emphasize that she does make the effort to be objective, as she understands the concept.
