A good book, full of information. A printed version may better to use as a reference for some of the topics and products discussed. I bought the kindle version after completing the audible to find then make notes on some of the books information.

I like history that gives facts in a narrative. Getting the viewpoints of the people in that era, from all POVs, is how to get a feeling for that time. The authors opinion and viewpoints are not wanted. Judging history from a contemporaneous set of values is credulous. I want to form my own opinions ,not be persuaded by the writer. History that is written to persuade is malpractice. This is history written in a light Howard Zinn perspective instead of being agnostic with the facts.

The author starts out apolitical and neutral on the history of gun manufacturing in the US . This is really the history of Winchester Repeating Arms Company, not the other companies such as Colt, S&W, one mention of Marlin. The history basically stops in the 1920s and becomes a gun control rant.

The book at points becomes a women's studies course on Sara Winchester and her spiritualism (probably would be "white guilt" also). To much of the book is about Sara Winchester.

This is what you get from a Yale history professor.

The history sections are great, but 65% of the book is about Outlander, actors and inside Hollywood stuff. Gets boring after awhile.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

it was interesting, but would have been more interesting without the SJW trope.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

so what..

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

N/A

Do you think The Potlikker Papers needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No...I wouldn't read it.....I am tired of its SJW narrative.

Any additional comments?

Great content but the presentation has something to be desired.

Buckeye Elegy would be a better title

If you could sum up Hillbilly Elegy in three words, what would they be?

don't move to Ohio

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

There are dysfunctional people and families everywhere.

Have you listened to any of J. D. Vance’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

no

What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?

There are people in this world that strive and others who want to be taken care of. The interesting emphasis of this early in the book when he discusses a job he has that is easy. A young druggy and his girl friend also work there. They can't show up for work on time, take off when they want to --basically they lack the soft skills necessary for employment. Sad to say there are to many people in our society like this.

Any additional comments?

The title should be changed to Buckeye Elegy. I have found more people from Ohio who have these problems of out of wedlock children, drug abuse, and total dysfunctionality because these actions are tolerated and not condemned from by their families and friends. Being of the diaspora of Appalachia (WV) these are not the norm. My peers from WV are accomplished in state and through out the Southeast. This lifestyle is more of Ohio than of Appalachia..

Would you try another book from Daniel Kahneman and/or Patrick Egan?

Yes. The material is fascinating and insightful. It is well written.

Do you think Thinking, Fast and Slow needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Yes. The information in the book is very interesting. If kahneman writes another I will get it, but I will read it instead of listening to it.

Any additional comments?

This book needs to be read not listened to. The subject matter is deep and might warrant going back over a section or two to better understand the section you are reading. I enjoyed the book , but would have enjoyed it more if I read it.
