Historia
James Bond is shattered by the murder of his wife at the hands of Ernst Stavro Blofeld, and only the prospect of a particularly challenging mission can draw him out of his deep depression. Determined to restore 007 to his former effectiveness, M sends Bond to Japan, where a criminal mastermind is using a poisonous garden inside a rocky island fortress to lure people to their deaths. Bond will have to infiltrate and destroy this mysterious "Castle of Death" in exchange for top secret Japanese intelligence.

Too Much Unnecessary Information
Revisado: 04-04-25
This is my least favorite James Bond book. There was too much irrelevant information about Japanese culture and customs. The list of poisonous plants in the “Garden of Death” was mind numbing. However, the second half of the book was vintage James Bond, and the “cliffhanger”ending made me rush to my book shelf for the next story in the series.

Drawing on the latest scholarship as well as eyewitness reports, diary entries, and memoirs, Lloyd moves from the great battles of 1914 to the final collapse of the Central Powers in 1918, showing how a local struggle between Austria-Hungary and Serbia spiraled into a massive conflagration that pulled in Germany, Russia, Italy, Romania, and Bulgaria.

Historia
In the foment of Weimar-era Berlin, the Oppermann brothers represent tradition and stability. One brother oversees the furniture chain founded by their grandfather, one is an eminent surgeon, and one a respected critic. They are rich, cultured, liberal, and public-spirited, proud inheritors of the German Enlightenment. They don't see Hitler as a threat. Then, to their horror, the Nazis come to power, and the Oppermanns and their children are faced with the terrible decision of whether to adapt—if they can—flee or try to fight.

This is a beautifully written novel about the Nazi’s takeover of a seemingly civilized country and their destruction, with the cooperation of too many Germans, of a cultured and loyal Jewish minority.

The Remarkable Story of Lincoln’s Nomination
Revisado: 01-17-25
This book gives a thorough account of the events surrounding Lincoln’s improbable nomination by the Republican Party for President in 1860. Unfortunately, the account is marred by the inclusion of excessive amounts of material whose relation the main event is only marginal at best.

Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

Too Much Unimportant Information
Revisado: 05-17-24
This overly long book contained no new or meaningful information about Churchill’s inspiring leadership of England during the first year of his prime ministership. The story had been told many times before by authors whose talents equal or exceed those of Mr. Larsen.

Historia
It starts with the body of a Hollywood producer in the trunk of a Rolls-Royce, shot twice in the head at close range - what looks like "trunk music", a Mafia hit. But the LAPD's organized crime unit is curiously uninterested, and when Harry follows a trail of gambling debts to Las Vegas, the case suddenly becomes more complex - and much more personal.

Connellys Puzzling Plot
Revisado: 02-18-24
I am a huge Michael Connelly fan. However, I don’t understand Connelly’s decision to devote three quarters of the book to the pursuit by Harry Bosch and his colleagues of an explanation for the murder which they abandon in favor of a new explanation that turns out to be correct. I am disappointed that the author devoted so much space, and so much of the reader’s time to a dead end. Also, why did the kill

Historia
Hans Castorp is, on the face of it, an ordinary man in his early 20s, on course to start a career in ship engineering in his home town of Hamburg, when he decides to travel to the Berghof Santatorium in Davos. The year is 1912 and an oblivious world is on the brink of war. Castorp’s friend Joachim Ziemssen is taking the cure and a three-week visit seems a perfect break before work begins. But when Castorp arrives he is surprised to find an established community of patients, and little by little, he gets drawn into the closeted life and the individual personalities of the residents.

Historia
The massive offensives on the Eastern Front during 1915 are too often overshadowed by the events in Western Europe, but the scale and ferocity of the clashes between Imperial Germany, Hapsburg Austria-Hungary, and Tsarist Russia were greater than anything seen on the Western Front and ultimately as important to the final outcome of the war. Now, with the work of internationally renowned Eastern Front expert Prit Buttar, this fascinating story of the unknown side of the First World War is finally being told.

This book thoroughly describes the enormous loss of life among soldiers on the Eastern Front in 1915 and the failure of both the Austria-Hungarian and Russian military leaders to learn from their mistakes.
I only wish the book contained more maps so I could follow the movements of all the armies.

But when he and his top team are ambushed by a rival, he is gravely injured and placed in "half-life," a dreamlike state of suspended animation. Soon, though, the surviving members of the team begin experiencing some strange phenomena, such as Runciter's face appearing on coins and the world seeming to move backward in time.

Historia
Goodwin describes the broken friendship between Teddy Roosevelt and his chosen successor, William Howard Taft. With the help of the "muckraking" press, Roosevelt had wielded the Bully Pulpit to challenge and triumph over abusive monopolies, political bosses, and corrupting money brokers. Roosevelt led a revolution that he bequeathed to Taft only to see it compromised as Taft surrendered to money men and big business. The rupture led Roosevelt to run against Taft for president, an ultimately futile race that gave power away to the Democrats.

Another Outstanding Work by Doris Kearns Goodwin
Revisado: 06-29-23
As Doris Kearns Goodwin demonstrated so ably in Team of Rivals and No Ordinary Time, The Bully Pulpit proves that she both an outstanding historian and a spellbinding storyteller. I only wish that today’s Presidents would exhibit a fraction of the integrity and concern for the wellbeing of America’s regular citizens exemplified by Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft.
