This is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man's search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend.

If you liked the closure of the first three, don’t get started with this
Revisado: 01-09-19
Unlike the first three books, which each built on the last but contained a complete story, this is entirely buildup with very little payoff. There were 3 story lines and one didn’t even join up with the others. It was still entertaining and the world of Darrow is interesting so this is entirely consistent with most authors. I had just come to expect more out of this series. In short, if you like endless sequels then this sets you up for that. If you like a self contained trilogy, don’t read this book and consider yourself done with Darrow.

Historia
The world will end on Saturday. Next Saturday. Just before dinner, according to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655. The armies of Good and Evil are amassing and everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except that a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture. And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist.

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night. But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway - a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors.

They broke nothing, though the room was filled with many fragile things
Revisado: 10-16-18
This book was fabulous. I don't mean that it was great, it was actually kinda boring but everything in it was fabulous—in a one-dimensional way. The costumes, the performances, the food, were all so perfect that the author just couldn't possibly describe, so we were just told it was so. An instructive quote may be when two of the protagonists—I don't really know if there were any antagonists but certainly neither of these—were competing in a wizards duel, "They broke nothing, though the room was filled with many fragile things." The book had a magic system, but didn't seem to hold it to any rules so it was always more and better without any cost.

Historia
How can we make intelligent decisions about our increasingly technology-driven lives if we don’t understand the difference between the myths of pseudoscience and the testable hypotheses of science? Pulitzer Prize-winning author and distinguished astronomer Carl Sagan argues that scientific thinking is critical not only to the pursuit of truth but to the very well-being of our democratic institutions.

This is a book in want of an editor
Revisado: 10-16-18
This is a book in want of an editor. There were some good lines in it, but to listen to it from cover to cover was a sprawling mess of digressions, cherry-picked research, and opinions that bordered on whiny. I consider myself sympathetic to many of the arguments, and I still felt they were made poorly. I just don't know who the audience would be. When describing the need for the scientific method I thought it was targeted at middle school readers, and was sad that Carl Sagan didn't take the time to explain in his own words what the scientific method is. But later he's making quips about esoteric scientific theories that would be opaque to anyone not versed in a history of science. It will not well either. Though it was released in 2017, it feels like it was written during the Obama administration when a little cutting of science funding was the biggest problem. Full scale nationalism, anti-science, anti-intellectualism is a problem in "some countries" around the world, not our own. It had one redeeming factor: If you can get Cary Elwes to narrate your book then you've made it in life. Combined with a wide ranging discussion of Alien phenomenon, there were redeeming qualities in this book. Organization was not among them.

To much sound variation
Revisado: 09-11-18
On stage, a dynamic range of volume is exciting. In my headphones, after cranking the volume to hear the whisper of some madman, the blasting trumpets of battle were too much. Also, while the performance was great, this isn't the sort of thing you can pick up to gain an exposure to Shakespeare. In a script or on stage you have done clue as to who is speaking. I enjoyed the one liners but I have no more understanding of the titles than when I started

Classics seem worn out because everybody has copied them
Revisado: 03-28-17
I wanted to like this and it does have some redeeming qualities but overall kinda slow. This was made worse by the reader who also did the Atlas Shrugged performance I heard so I just kept hearing that pompous John Galt in the protagonists. The performance on this one was better, because the antagonist were not quite so whiny but still to close to the same themes in that book. Pity.

Not bad but for the comparables
Revisado: 03-21-17
After getting the free book by the same author about an insurance salesman that was so fantastically ridiculous I was excited for a swords and sorcery book in the same vein but this book was ho hum. It didn't help that I just finished Red Rising, read by the same guy and covering many of the same class divide topics but more intelligent in the subplots. If not for those two bits of context I'd probably recommend this book but in comparison is recommend either over this one.
