Boring
Revisado: 12-30-20
On paper, the premise looks inviting. Tell an old and much-loved story from a fresh perspective of one of the prominent characters, who is primarily responsible for the Mahabharata war. I started the book with much enthusiasm but alas...The book is heavily burdened by the powerful sense of victimhood that is prevalent in most mainstream feminist ideas. Major plot points and narratives are warped and twisted to generate sympathy for Draupadi as the protagonist. But all that the author achieves is to make her sound like a whiny ancient child who probably drank the 1900s Jim Jones Kool-aid too much. It becomes tiring listening to complaints about events or comments that, if you're knowledgeable about the real Mahabharata, are out of context and actually harmless, mythologically speaking.

Do Not listen to this book, read it
Revisado: 12-30-20
The narration is so terrible that you cannot concentrate on the story. Could the producers have not auditioned a narrator who could pronounce basic bengali words without butchering the the beautiful language completely? Especially in a story which is so heavy on many bengali words! How was the writer OK with such a crap narration of her piece of work beats me. DO NOT listen to this book, read it instead, because the story is quite good. I would give zero stars to the performance if I could, but alas amazon doesn't allow me to do that.

Historia
Among the estimated 100 billion solar systems in the known universe, evolving life is surely abundant. That evolution is a process of "becoming" in each case. Since Newton, we have turned to physics to assess reality. But physics alone cannot tell us where we came from, how we arrived, and why our world has evolved past the point of unicellular organisms to an extremely complex biosphere.

Bleh!!
Revisado: 11-22-19
I found this audiobook a hodgepodge of exciting, some rejected and mostly speculative ideas, neither here nor there. It is short and hence sorely inadequate in covering the rich, complex and diverse topic of origins in any sense. It failed to provide me with any measure of digestible information about how life may have actually originated. Unnecessary repetition of phrases encoding simple straightforward concepts such as 'ergodic universe above the level of atoms' just comes off as pretentious rather than as a sincere attempt to educate the listener. Anthropomorphization of dna molecules would have been fun if the preceding and following passages had conveyed any actual scientifically-grounded information rather than fantasies. On more than one occasion, I felt that the author was striving to sound informed about the topic rather than truly understanding the depth of the problem. I would have been more interested in lectures that detailed his own work, or devoted more time to constraint closure concepts with accompanying diagrams. In the end, the audiobook just left me frustrated with a growing sense that I was listening to nonsense after the first hour.

Historia
In the mid-1970s, scientists began using DNA sequences to reexamine the history of all life. Perhaps the most startling discovery to come out of this new field is horizontal gene transfer (HGT), or the movement of genes across species lines. For instance, we now know that roughly eight percent of the human genome arrived not through traditional inheritance from directly ancestral forms, but sideways by viral infection - a type of HGT. In The Tangled Tree David Quammen chronicles these discoveries through the lives of the researchers who made them.

Brilliant!

Evolution and taxonomy have always fascinated me but never had any formal training in. Was looking for a book that could lend me a quick and easy intro to the field. I tried this book with that intention but I got way more than I had bargained for. This is by far the best texts and audibles that I've come across. Lucid, clear explanations, great conceptual coverage; as a non-layman scientist I love the effort and the scientific depth. The author knows what he is talking about and takes no prisoners and leaves no history untouched. Thanks to the book, I can now understand seminars from seasoned experts in the field. Great work!
