Historia
Retired policeman Tom Kettle is enjoying the quiet of his new home, a lean-to annexed to a white Victorian Castle in Dalkey overlooking the sea. For months he has barely seen a soul, but his peace is interrupted when two former colleagues turn up at his door to ask questions about a decades-old case. A traumatic case which Tom never quite came to terms with. His peace is further disturbed by a young mother and family who move in next door, a woman on the run from her own troubles. And what of Tom’s family, his wife June, and their two children?

Sebastian Barry needs to pay for my therapy so that the distressing images that have been seared in my mind can be removed. I could not finish.

Goes on and on
Revisado: 09-17-23
For the most part, it’s well written, but it became frustrating because of so much inner dialogue. The main character’s thoughts are so thoroughly described that it takes forever to get to what happens next.
Unfortunately, it’s also not too original. I’ve listened to several books now where the main character (always a woman) is not believed by the police and/or her friends and families. She’s also abusing her anxiety meds (or drinking too much), and is constantly putting her self in ridiculously dangerous situations. And of course, she either forgot her phone, lost it, it has no charge, or there are no bars.
I guessed who the bad guy was pretty early in the story.
Overall, a good attempt but falls short.

Historia
It begins on the shaded town square in a sleepy Southern town. A spirited seven-year-old has a brisk business at her lemonade stand. But the little girl’s pretty yellow dress can’t quite hide the ugly scar on her chest. Her latest customer, a bearded stranger, drains his cup and heads to his car, his mind on a boat he's restoring at a nearby lake. The stranger understands more about the scar than he wants to admit. And the beat-up bread truck careening around the corner with its radio blaring is about to change the trajectory of both their lives.

Cute Story but …
Revisado: 07-26-23
This is a sweet plot with likable characters. However, being that I’m a very flawed individual, I have a very hard time relating to characters that are perfect in every way. The main character in this story always does and thinks the right things. He also has photographic memory, is an excellent student, adroit with his hands (builds houses, boats, etc.), perfect husband, friend, and family member. I have nothing in common with this person so it becomes a fantasy (which I don’t really care for) instead of a realistic drama that I might learn something from or be inspired by. As a matter of fact, with the exception of a couple of characters, every one is pretty much perfect.
Additionally, you figure out how it’s going to end soon after beginning the book, which makes it even less interesting. Can’t recommend.

Historia
This is Reaper speaking. So begins an anonymous letter published in a Utah newspaper after a young couple is viciously murdered. Tooele County sheriff Elizabeth Gray leads the investigation into the double homicide, which is eerily reminiscent of a string of brutal killings years ago. When the letter leads detectives to yet another body, Gray calls on an old friend for help.

Methos, My Favorite Mystery Author
Revisado: 05-31-23
I’ve listened to hundreds of mysteries/police procedurals and I’m often left wanting. They tend to feature a nearly-flawless main character, with unparalleled skills and a linear plot with a predictable ending. And surprisingly, most of these books have rave reviews. Methos’ writing is a breath of fresh air. The central characters are thought-provoking, realistic, flawed, and have interesting backstories. His books always end too soon. I enjoy his plots and highly recommend his work.

Historia
Bryce Witherspoon’s heart races every time she sees Kaegan Chambray. Everyone in town knows they can’t stand each other, but the truth is, even though the man broke her heart 10 years ago, she still feels that irresistible, oh-so-familiar jolt of desire. When Kaegan returned to Catalina Cove to run the family business, he knew there’d be no avoiding Bryce. The woman he thought he’d one day marry was instead the biggest heartbreak of his life. But when Bryce lets slip a devastating secret, he discovers just how wrong he was to let her go all those years ago.

Cute, but …
Revisado: 05-26-23
Sweet, very predictable story where the “good” characters are gorgeous, kind, moral . . . perfect (even the teenagers). The explicit sex scenes were like watching a Hallmark movie and accidentally changing the channel to porn. In the midst of a fairytale there was suddenly lots of thrusting and moaning. I’m no prude, but found the discrepancies jarring.

Too Silly to be True
Revisado: 03-03-23
A smart who-done-it is so hard to find. I think authors believe they have to outdo other authors or their last book so they make the story with so many ridiculous twists that it ends up turning me off and no longer caring about who did it.
