Historia
Laying low in America, Jameson Parker is going to have to find himself a way to be useful if he wants to benefit from the protection of the paranormal power brokers on this side of the pond: bitter Machiavellian vampires. But when staying on their good side means sliding back into the darkness, is his survival really worth cutting ties with those he left behind?

An Interesting Collection of Ideas
Revisado: 07-22-24
After the first book I was interested in where the story COULD go and it was promising in the beginning. There are a lot of interesting ideas and world building happening in this book. But the story kinda goes nowhere and feels drawn out for no reason. (At one point going back to London to learn about a library, grab a character from the first book, and make the main character look less heroic/badass). At one point halfway through Jameson say something to the affect of "I bet your wondering where is the story going" and by the time I noticed only 5 minutes of runtime left I took was asking where the hell is this story going. I probably won't listen to a 3rd book without some encouraging reviews.
I was recommended this book because I love Urban Fantasy. Dresden Files, Rivers of London, and Arcane Casebook, but this is not the same kind of story. Especially when they leaned heavily on treating the main character like a drug addict that has to abstain from magic because they can't themselves with it, I really lost hope for the story. The hero trope of losing faith in themselves is fine, but they eventually find that belief in themselves and rise to be a hero. Not here. I don't believe anyone in the story that calls him a badass because nothing he does makes him seem badass or someone other than a guy you feel sorry for.

Historia
When a magical plague is released in a Depression-era New York soup kitchen, private detective Alex Lockerby finds himself in a desperate hunt to catch a madman before he can strike again. His investigations lead Alex to a famous thief, a daring heist, and the search for a mythic book of ancient magic, but none of that brings him any closer to finding the man responsible for the massacre. With the police and New York’s Council of Sorcerers desperate to find the culprit, Alex becomes a suspect himself, thanks to his ties to the priest who ran the soup kitchen.

Awesome arcane detective in well laid out Mage-punk world. I kept having to remind myself I wasn't listening to an episode of Full Metal Alchemist with Vic doing the performance .

Historia
Welcome to the bizarre and dangerous world of Victorian London, a city teetering on the edge of revolution. Its people are ushering in a new era of technology, dazzled each day by unfamiliar inventions. Airships soar in the skies over the city, while ground trains rumble through the streets and clockwork automatons are programmed to carry out menial tasks in the offices of lawyers, policemen, and journalists.

kinda like Steampunk irobot
Revisado: 06-21-20
The story wasn't bad. A dark London dealing with advancing technology, ideas, and a zombie plague. It definitely ticked a lot of the steampunk/ gaslamp fantasy check boxes. It may be one of the few book I would have rather read than listened to. The narrator...... just didn't feel excited or in the mood. It was read, not really preformed. I may just be spoiled by some great performances but I had this on 1.5 near the end just getting the feeling of some energy.

Historia
Sherlock Holmes is an unparalleled genius who uses the gift of deduction and reason to solve the most vexing of crimes. Warlock Holmes, however, is an idiot. A good man, perhaps; a font of arcane power, certainly. But he’s brilliantly dim. Frankly, he couldn’t deduce his way out of a paper bag. The only things he has really got going for him are the might of a thousand demons and his stalwart flatmate. Thankfully, Dr. Watson is always there to aid him through the treacherous shoals of Victorian propriety...

Historia
They say it's not the fall that kills you. For Josette Dupre, the Corps' first female airship captain, it might just be a bullet in the back. On top of patrolling the front lines, she must also contend with a crew who doubts her expertise, a new airship that is an untested deathtrap, and the foppish aristocrat Lord Bernat, a gambler and shameless flirt with the military know-how of a thimble. Bernat's own secret assignment is to catalog her every moment of weakness and indecision.

A great adventure in military airship combat
Revisado: 10-18-17
A great little adventure and wonderful characters along for the ride. The overtones and undertones of what people say verses their true meaning is wonderful. The description is fairly accurate and I wish I had listened sooner.
Haven't read many books about airships and trying to fight the enemy as well as keeping a crew alive. (This actually makes number 2). It inspires that feel of adventure and tension found in naval combat adventures and pirate books.
I enjoyed this novel for the same reason I enjoy The Expance series. The danger is always high and the science is hard. Math will save your life!
Now I don't know if the science or math is accurate per say, but it is presented as true and kept at the forefront of danger the characters must respect to stay alive. Weight and the distribution of it is a big factor of running an airship and always at the forefront of life aboard.
Now I will say this. A few sites and comments of this book described it as a romance adventure, which it is not. It is a military fantasy throughout. The idea of a supposedly romantic subplot undercuts the characters and belittles their growth and development. The two main characters are male and female, but they don't fall in love by the end or have a romantic tension. They gain a respectful understanding of each other and a battle born friendship. Now this could be developed later in the series, but by the end the are not swooning in each other embrace. The act more as friends or siblings and have fought and ran into danger side by side. So if you are on the sidelines about this book because of the idea it is a romance in disguise, fear not.

Read, damn you! Read! The journey is not done yet!
Revisado: 08-02-17
Such a great fantasy series. The journey was grand and exciting. Their was action, intrigue, and laughs. Their was danger and despair. Some of our cherished friends we learned to love, sadly perished before the day was won. Royce and Hadrian are some of the greatest heroes (unlikely or otherwise) put to paper. I will miss reading of the great adventures together........... what's that? There's a prequel series that chronicles their first couple of years working together. With the same wonderful narrator! I've gotta go...

I LOVE THIS STORY!!! Epic Fantasy at it's best!
Revisado: 05-12-17
This is a great story about a young man's journey into manhood. Aedon starts as a 12yr old young man living a quite life in a small town with his friends going on childhood adventures. That quickly changes when evil men from an enemy nation shows up to ruin all that. Aedon and his family are forced to move to the big fortress city of Casteth (not sure the spelling) where things still don't go right. Things do get better, so don't give up if that bums you out for a minute. He finds his way into the Academy and starts training to one day fight back against those who would hurt and kill others.
Two notes:
1- This is just book 1 of three, so you will have to wait to see what happens next after it's finished.
2- A big thing that Aedon deals with is PTSD brought on from living with an abusive father. There is domestic violence at the beginning and it does make life very difficult at times for Aedon while dealing with the memories. He does break from these fears by the end, but that is a hard road. It is not a constant theme and he does some amazing things in spite of it.
3- There is no magic per say in this book. plenty of fanatical elements, but no wizards and spells.
