The Diamond Age is a stunning tale; set in 21st-century Shanghai, it is the story of what happens what a state-of-the-art interactive device falls into the hands of a street urchin named Nell. Her life, and the entire future of humanity, is about to be decoded and reprogrammed.

confusing mess
Revisado: 05-01-25
while I listened to the end, the story requires too much concentration and you never really grasp what's happening. i also had to look up earlier on whether this was a jumble or random short stories. it is not, just not a casual listen.

Historia
Deep inside Fairchild Air Force Base, Project Eternal Vigilance has continued to watch and wait for the Andromeda Strain to reappear. On the verge of being shut down, the project has registered no activity - until now. A Brazilian terrain-mapping drone has detected a bizarre anomaly of otherworldly matter in the middle of the jungle, and, worse yet, the tell-tale chemical signature of the deadly microparticle. With this shocking discovery, the next-generation Project Wildfire is activated, and a diverse team of experts hailing from all over the world is dispatched to investigate.

Books need a personality, and this has none and even fewer characters. There is a section where the author just lists off things that are being brought on an expedition, as if this is what occurs in literature??

Interesting diversion, world building not his best
Revisado: 05-10-19
For anyone with any military background, you’ll quickly see the author has none. All in all, the story is enjoyable if you’re okay with the “science” part of the science-fiction being wholly unbelievable. The word ‘coward’ appears repeatably, and given we are supposed to believe this is a military organization with human origins, the proper word ‘deserter’ (in the context of the story), is absent from their lexicon. I admit this was a detractor for me, as was the call sign of “jerk face” (reminiscent of ‘cooties’ and ‘poopy pants’), and how an admiral can send children off to fight battles and risk their lives in high tech fighters against a superior enemy, yet not feed or allow one of them to use the facilities. I shrugged it all off.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Any additional comments?
I think i came into this book expecting way to much after loving the Martian. In one of the most intense scenes of the book, the main character, a package delivery gal, commits a major-major criminal act and is offered a choice between getting arrested and deported back to Earth, or having lunch with an ex boyfriend. She reluctantly agreed to having lunch, no joke. And we are to believe that a billionaire, after contracting out said major-major criminal activity, texts the person who committed said activity on his behalf, saying that the job wasn't done to his satisfaction and that she better make it or right, or he will find someone else. So much for covering your tracks. and keeping things on the down-low. There are enough things like this that it becomes a distraction, and you realize the whole plot could use a little more thought.
I did not dislike the book, though coming from this author, he could have, and should have, done a lot better.

The epic and highly anticipated conclusion to the listener-favorite series that had countless Audible listeners (and employees) hooked from the very first Bob - featuring, as always, a flawless performance from the inimitable Ray Porter. Being a sentient spaceship really should be more fun. But after spreading out through space for almost a century, Bob and his clones just can't stay out of trouble. They've created enough colonies so humanity shouldn't go extinct.

So this is how it went down. I enjoyed book 1 so much I bought book 2 but was like, eh, and then I was like, well book 2 was not as good as book 1 but I am curious how it all ends. Well book 3 was a true disappointment truth be told. Felt kind of rushed, not haphazard, but that it could have been so much better. Im in for 3 books from this author and hope his new creations live up to book 1 standards.

Book 2's are often disappointing but not here, the author once again left me wanting more, I could not really ask for better. I'm desperate for book 3. You must read book 1 to understand what's going on. My only regret is that i got through it to quickly and now have to wait for the story to continue

Could not stop listening. If you enjoy Ken Follet books you would likely enjoy this. The characters and plot are well developed, and the universe the author creates is rich and leaving you wanting more. No shortcuts here, this is well done and first class .

Colonel Joe Bishop made a promise and he's going to keep it; taking the captured alien starship Flying Dutchman back out. He doesn't agree when the UN decides to send almost 70 elite Special Operations troops, hotshot pilots, and scientists with him; the mission is a fool's errand he doesn't expect to ever return from. At least, this time, the Earth is safe, right? Not so much.

A step down from book 1
Revisado: 07-24-17
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I enjoyed book 1 though in book 2 it lacked any real suspense. You just kind of know the humans will prevail, and silver bullets appear for the humans anytime they need to get out of a mess. I had suspected that this was the authors formula in book 1 and in book 2 it was much of the same. When they discovered the RV in the crashed alien ship, that pretty much proved it for me. If you enjoy a book where the characters truly struggle, you wont get that here.

Historia
Critically acclaimed author Alastair Reynolds holds a well-deserved place “among the leaders of the hard-science space opera renaissance." ( Publishers Weekly). In Blue Remembered Earth, Geoffrey Akinya wants nothing more than to study the elephants of the Amboseli basin. But when his space-explorer grandmother dies, secrets come to light and Geoffrey is dispatched to the Moon to protect the family name - and prevent an impending catastrophe.

Good but not epic
Revisado: 05-05-15
Is there anything you would change about this book?
For a book this long, the universe, characters and plot need to be bigger. I am a big fan of Reynolds earlier books but struggled to find satisfaction with this one. This could easily be adapted to a short story and all the interesting stuff packed into 50 pages. The characters are few and his universe feels small and dim. The plot? It felt developed along the way and the whole mystery with the glove and box, and the wild goose chase, it played out for far, far to long. Much ado about nothing.... I loved Pushing Ice but this isn't in the same category.
