Silly "future talk" and dopey NY accents
Revisado: 03-27-25
Curiosity kept me listening even though I was annoyed at the fake accents and the long-winded explanations. In the end, it wasn't worth plowing through to the end. I was just so sick of it all, I didn't care anymore about who did what.
The author has tried to place the action in 2059-something, by imagining gadgets and terminology that might exist. It is annoying and lame. And it doesn't add anything to the story.
Twists and turns of the plot are spelled out in long conversations where one character explains EVERYTHING to another. How is it that they have all this insight all of a sudden?
And Peabody...what a stupid character with a stupid accent. She is just too obvious all the time.
I don't know how I happened upon this book, but I definitely will pass on any more in the series.
Dull dull dull.

I liked the portrayal of a strong, capable woman who knows she is damaged but continues to press to do what's right.

Couldn't wait to find out if this was based in fact. Amazing Fortitude and Determination
Revisado: 01-26-25
I loved the reinforcement for honesty, integrity, and maintaining a true spirit. Duty honor country is the West Point motto. It rings true even from the start and through such adverse circumstances.
I have been to West Point many times. The descriptions here were really interesting, to imagine what it was before it became the USMA.
Characters were well developed and easy to empathize with. Performance was great!

Sous chef Aimee Tierney has the perfect recipe for the perfect life: marry her childhood sweetheart, raise a family, and buy out her parents’ restaurant. But when her fiancé, James Donato, vanishes in a boating accident, her well-baked future is swept out to sea. Instead of walking down the aisle on their wedding day, Aimee is at James’s funeral - a funeral that leaves her more unsettled than at peace.

Sophomoric writing
Revisado: 01-17-25
I can't believe this author has more than one published book. I can't believe she is older than twelve. And I wonder if her editor is a complete idiot, or is being paid to look the other way. The concept/plot might have been intriguing if she didn't over-explain every thought, every action, and every emotion. Even the scenery and what people are wearing are described when it has no bearing on the story or atmosphere. Too many unnecessary adjectives. The main character continuously waffles between overly-described physical attraction to whoever is in her sights at the moment (the tingles went down my arm...up my thigh...through my chest...whatever!) and angst over whether she SHOULD be feeling whatever she is feeling. She shows a tiresome lack of commitment to whatever action she is taking...whether it is to find James, or get over him...to be her own person, or live out James' dream for her...to engage with Ian or warn him off. I couldn't wait to be done. And then the EPILOGUE!!! OMG. Please tell me you are not going to rehash the whole thing again with James as protagonist!!! Deliver me!!!

Historia
Patric Gagne realized she made others uncomfortable before she started kindergarten. Something about her caused people to react in a way she didn’t understand. She suspected it was because she didn’t feel things the way other kids did. Emotions like fear, guilt, and empathy eluded her. For the most part, she felt nothing. And she didn’t like the way that “nothing” felt.

Honest and enlightening
Revisado: 12-14-24
Pragmatic, thoughtful, and sensitive. I admire the author's tenacity and willingness to dig in and research, apply what she learned and provide an honest accounting of her results, both good and bad. An amazing journey. Should give hope to those struggling with their own challenges and those of loved ones. Inspiring, for sure.

An eye opener
Revisado: 10-03-24
This should be mandatory reading for middle-schoolers. Consequences of "just kidding around" are far more hurtful and lasting than kids can conceive of. I wanted to just scream in many places.
It also made me think...even as an adult, being marginalized, even though one is viewed as 'privileged' in today's lexicon, continues the patterns of hurt and resentment while silencing any ability to talk about it for fear of appearing politically incorrect. Disrespect hurts everyone.

Revisado: 06-05-24
I really wished he would get over Livie. It doesn't make sense that he would continue to hold that torch, when her true character is revealed over and over. After realizing she was just using him during the coronation ball, he should have written her off. He has too much substance to be that weak.
Other than that, thoroughly enjoyed it!!

Amazing Courage Tempered by unfathomable Self-Doubt
Revisado: 06-01-24
A fascinating story told with candor. Unfiltered . And just when I was starting to wish she would just get over herself, it ended. I assume we all go through these times of questioning where we are going or why we are here. Hopefully they are spread out and interspersed with times of joy or satisfaction or just oblivion. Here, Brianne's are all together, one after another. It must have been exhausting. But I do love her peek into what it could be like, living freely, without all the burdens we accumulate. Cheers to her for being unrelenting in that pursuit!
