As an Oriole fan from 1968 on, stories of Earl Weavers methods and antics were not new to me. What was new was his minor league career. He was actually a better player statistically than most of us knew in the ‘70s. Had he been five inches taller, he’d still be short for a major leaguer, but probably would have had a journeyman’s career as a second baseman and would not have had the opportunity to hone his craft of being one of the best managers of the era.

If you already have a working system that manages your current projects and keeps track of future desires, this book probably won’t expand your bandwidth. The one takeaway that might aid the over scheduled is to not fill your calendar, schedule beyond 50% capacity.

Newport has detailed his highly personalized system, sprinkled stories from the arts where projects with years-long gestation periods burst onto the scene to great seemingly overnight success.

If you have a high degree of control over your work schedule; or, can negotiate it, there may be a nugget buried in here.

Take a serious look at “4 Hour Workweek” and “Getting Things Done” for useful tactics. “Slow Productivity” is for mapping your strategy.

Arrogant, moronic corporate “leaders” abounded for many decades. Bob Lutz details some of the foibles of the people he worked with over his career. Some of these guys you’ll know by name, some by their archetype. Entertaining. If you’ve worked in a Fortune 500 you’ll recognize some of these characters.

The most interesting one, though, is his Marine Corps DI. He got the job done and even changed his ways with the times to produce effective Marines.
