In this monumental and provocative history, Patrick Buchanan makes the case that, if not for the blunders of British statesmen - Winston Churchill first among them - the horrors of two world wars and the Holocaust might have been avoided and the British Empire might never have collapsed into ruins.

Good, a different view on WW1 and WW2
Revisado: 10-31-24
I like how it shows the realpolitik perspective on the major events of the 20th century and explains the situations, the decisions by different sides and why led to them.
It illustrates how the different narratives played an important part in shaping public perception of the two world wars, however, the authors also have a certain narrative to push. Instead of lying out the events as they unfolded in a balanced way, the author repeatedly emphasizes the blunders by the west, UK and US during the previous century. The book could be more balanced, focusing more on historical perspective.
However it was very informational and shared a lot of tidbits I had no idea about. Was a difficult listen thought, took a few months to get through, as it a a heavy book.

Fascinating thidden history of bitcoin
Revisado: 10-17-24
The story of how Bitcoin leadership fractured under the weight of personal incentives and turned political. How one version emerged victorious through repressing competition and controlling the narrative. The bright story we all wanted to believe in turned out to be a heavily engineered piece of propaganda!

Historia
The Dealmaker is a frank and honest account of how a severely dyslexic child who struggled at school went on to graduate from Oxford and become a serial entrepreneur. It describes Guy Hand's career in private equity, first at Nomura and then as head of his own company, Terra Firma. It looks in detail at the huge deals that Terra Firma has done over the years, involving everything from cinema chains and pubs to waste management, aircraft leasing and green energy.

Very Interesting, rather self involved
Revisado: 03-06-24
Guy has a lot of fascinating stories and experiences to share. I found it very interesting to learn more about how PE deals are done, and what’s involved in the process of negotiation. It was also interesting to hear about his own challenges and struggles with mental and physical health and it’s rather brave for him to share that.
As someone who worked in a similar field, and went through a similar burn out, it was quite fascinating to see the comparison.
However, it would’ve been nicer to have less self depreciating mentalizing and overthinking, and more specifics about his deal and lessons!

Here is Trump in action—how he runs his organization and how he runs his life—as he meets the people he needs to meet, chats with family and friends, clashes with enemies, and challenges conventional thinking. But even a maverick plays by rules, and Trump has formulated time-tested guidelines for success. He isolates the common elements in his greatest accomplishments; he shatters myths; he names names, spells out the zeros, and fully reveals the deal-maker's art. And throughout, Trump talks—really talks—about how he does it.

Loved it! Real stories from real deals
Revisado: 02-25-24
Great book, real stories with detailed information of what went into negotiating and closing some of Trumps biggest and most profitable deals. Would love to listen to a sequel about his more recent deals.
The book provides a rare window into the very private world of NY real estate. Exciting stuff and a deeper look at how Trump makes decisions and approaches business and life.

The rags-to-riches story of one of America's wealthiest and least-known financial giants, self-made billionaire Kirk Kerkorian - the daring aviator, movie mogul, risk taker, and business tycoon who transformed Las Vegas and Hollywood to become one of the leading financiers in American business. Kerkorian combined the courage of a World War II pilot, the fortitude of a scrappy boxer, the cunning of an inscrutable poker player, and an unmatched genius for making deals.

Interesting tale of Kirk’s business deals, relationships and life
Revisado: 01-03-24
I liked the focus on business details and deals, also the more private peak into a billionaire’s life and relationships.
However, the book lacked a more direct encounter with the person, would’ve been nice to hear some brief direct interviews or interactions with Kirk, or from archives. The booked portrays the man as he is seen by the author, but we do not get to experience a direct encounter with Kirk, or hear anything described in his own words or voice.

Historia
War with China is much more likely than anyone thinks. When Athens went to war with Sparta some 2,500 years ago, the Greek historian Thucydides identified one simple cause: A rising power threatened to displace a ruling one. As the eminent Harvard scholar Graham Allison explains, in the past 500 years, great powers have found themselves in "Thucydides's Trap" 16 times. In 12 of the 16, the results have been catastrophic.

Interesting historical examples and analysis. I liked the overall educational and informational format, which relies on historical facts, rather than opinions. Encourages the reader to think and consider world politics from a different, more pragmatic and long term, perspective.

I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. Revisado: 05-03-19
good writing and performance, but I want my 28 hours back! it's much longer than it should be, and the ending is meant to entice the reader to buy the next book, which is even longer.
The book does a surprisingly good job at introducing that world of strange magic, and explaining its source, which even makes sense to some degree. The characters, however could use more depth. Overall a captivating read, but leaves some things to be desired.
