Wow crazy good!!
Revisado: 08-30-23
Well, let me start by saying… It’s good. Like SURPRSINGLY good!
How so? Hmm, well, I most look for character driven stories and this book had that in SPADES!
Let me start by what usually disappoints me in LitRPGs:
-Characters kills EVERYTHING, “murderhobo” style and has NO interesting creatures, and sometimes I even end up feeling bad as it’s an endless slaughtered
-a LOT of litrpg has no real depth in MC besides power hungry and they have some OP ability (Spoiler: Dren does get A LOT stronger, but no OPness so I was on the edge of my seat if he was going to win or lose often)
-side characters are just boring cardboards cut outs and can’t connect
Luckily I felt the opposite with Skythief:
-In the first few pages, Dren shows compassion. Sure he’s a tad conflicted and WANTS to only get power, but he uses his cleverness to get out of sticky situations and get stronger, which was awesome to see WIT and stubbornness prevail over just sheer “OPness”
-Things are cleverly “set up” by the author, no dues ex machina
-Has tons of heart in side characters
So overall, it feels like a quick story (which is crazy b/c it’s 16+ hours and def a fully fleshed story), but even in that quick amount of time I CONNECTED with the chars. I felt like Dren, Vox and Kara - the main trio - showed real depth of character that surprised me, especially for a first book in the series.
I took a risk seeing it as fbook post in a LITRPG group for code giveaways, and very glad I did. Just joined the Patreon too for insider updates ;D Anyway, that’s it!
LONG STORY SHORT! DEFINITELY worth the credit! If you like LitRPG and read Dakota Krout, Dungeon Crawl Carl, or Primal Hunter, I think you’ll love this debut

Historia
Gray has a secret. He's a reborn legend called Ronin, an elemental guardian that protected one of the nine cities: wind, water, fire, stone, moon, sun, nature, metal, and flesh. The only problem? He's evil. Well, or at least, that's what everyone thinks. With his newfound power, Gray has plans to overcome this unfortunate stigma, unveil the true darkness, and reunite the other elemental Ronin. Considering they're feared as harbingers of chaos and destruction, however, it's...a bit of a tall order.

Goods:
+ fast paced story, believable and deep MC’s
+ epic battles
+ well done magic system, not “soft” but not too “hard” and complex, but I can tell it’s going to advance and get more complicated.
+ elemental powers
+ no cheesy love triangle, but a bit of a tension
+ good twists and turns. I didn’t expect
+ awesome premise with nine descendants of elemental legends
+ love that there is a character named Kail (so cool!)
Bads:
⁃Evil is a little just evil “bad guys” as the story begins, but as it evolves into Citadel of Fire, there’s a lot more moral complexity - especially with a character named Faye who I really enjoyed. So this is a plus and minus
⁃Book 1 is a little standard fantasy, which I like, but if that’s not your cup of tea
Overall, big fan of book one and two and the second books progresses SIGNIFICANTLY, and really draws you into the characters. Which, I felt they were a little flat in book 1 (though I think that was partly because there was so much going on), but it’s a nice slow burn as the books develop. Point is, amazing story, lots of humor, grand fantasy which I haven’t seen since Wheel of Time. If you’re a fan of Brandon Sanderson, you’ll love this. And TGR’s knocks it out of the park with this performance.
I crush books while driving or doing chores, and this series I just powered through. Once you get a few hours in, it’s impossible to put down. Love that it’s 50+ hours for 1 credit too.

Simply captivating!
Revisado: 06-30-21
Every time I read Mr. Wolf's books I keep thinking there's no way they could get better! Tides of Fate has proved me wrong yet again, and this is definitely one of his best works so far. I can't wait to listen to the rest of it because already the story has so much allure and new elements. Do yourself a favor and listen to this book! :)
