Historia
North America was settled by people with distinct religious, political, and ethnographic characteristics, creating regional cultures that have been at odds with one another ever since. Subsequent immigrants didn't confront or assimilate into an "American" or "Canadian" culture, but rather into one of the 11 distinct regional ones that spread over the continent each staking out mutually exclusive territory. In American Nations, Colin Woodard leads us on a journey through the history of our fractured continent....

Pro-Yankee Bias and Historical Mistakes
Revisado: 08-25-23
Lincoln lied about sending relief ships to Fort Sumpter - those ships did in fact contain men and material. Lincoln also promised to vacate the Fort soon after the ships arrived. Another lie. The federals' garrison was increased by the ships, indicating their intention to stay. Lincoln did this to provoke the South into retaking the Fort as a pretext for starting the War.
The author defers to the characterization of the South's enemies, but rarely quotes the leaders of the South except to condemn them. The Yankees on the other hand are endlessly praised, despite the fact that the author notes, and never really analyzes, that everyone disliked the Yankees.
I come away from this book with a better understanding of our country, but not a better understanding of the people other than the slave holders of the Deep South and the Tidewater.
I expected better, and certainly a more even hand. Even 150 years later, Yankees still feel the need to demonize the South to justify their illegal war of conquest.
Anyway, interesting book, read with a big grain of salt.

Unnecessary confusion
Revisado: 06-29-22
Gender neutral stuff is distracting
and inappropriate. Historical support or not, jumping back and forth between the two gender pronouns made me wonder if the choices were intentional. It also broke the flow of the narration. Otherwise it was good.

good, but
Revisado: 01-17-20
there are some holes I dont like. why are the heads of VL, literal command and control, infiltrating ALONE when they have an army? it was reckless and if it was just for their own emotional payoff, selfish. what the characters do has to change as they develop, and throwing in a lesbian plotline doesnt make up for the fact that the main characters growth feels stunted.

Historia
Irresistibly drawn to mysteries, if only to debunk them, reporter Lionel Page exposes supernatural frauds, swindlers, and charlatans. His latest case is an obsession—at least for an ancient and wealthy heiress: verify the authenticity of a lost Edgar Allan Poe manuscript circulating through New York City’s literary underworld. But the shrewd Regina Dunkle offers more than money. It’s a pact. Fulfill her request, and Lionel’s own notorious buried past, one he’s been running from since he was a child, will remain hidden.

Good but the Narrator
Revisado: 09-19-19
The book was good, as usual, and there might be some interesting multiverse stuff CS is leading up to. A new take on his usual premise. but the main character is a guy and the narrator is a woman, and it hurts the immersion to be honest. The narrator has talent, but is not properly utilized in his recording I guess is what I'm saying.

Historia
The goblin invasion is on...and a wizard's work is never done! After facing a hopeless siege, an implacable foe, and an impossible escape, you would think that Minalan the Spellmonger would be able to rest - but the armies of the undead goblin shaman Shereul (known as the Dead God to his human victims) are rolling over the Western reaches of the rustic Duchy of Alshar and is headed toward the heart of the Duchy of Castal. Thousands are fleeing for their lives as hordes of goblins pour out of Boval Vale and devastate the rugged fiefs of the Alshari Wilderlands.

So much fun...
Revisado: 05-29-17
This is a great story, engaging and interesting, and the author clearly has a good grasp of his world, its politics, magical systems, and all the rest. But the writing is sometimes painful. Now I understand that he is a novice writer, and this is one of his earlier efforts. I will presume the writing will improve as the man gets more practice. The reason I mention it is that it does sometimes interfere with my enjoyment of the book - I hate dangling participles.
That being said, it's so much fun and I love this series so far. Check it out.

Historia
Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

Excellent Book - Very Excited For Next Iteration
Revisado: 03-16-17
This book, which suffers only a little from the less than perfect writing, is a romping good time. The author displays insight and learning in politics and history and delightful bends and twists them to create an inciting fantasy world with a sarcastic and imperfect but all the more lovable for it protagonist.
I strenuously urge audible to get Warmage recorded and up on the site.

Historia
A young, naïve but ultimately courageous hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall towers above his rivals—in stature if not experience. Tagging along is his diminutive squire, a boy called Egg—whose true name is hidden from all he and Dunk encounter. Though more improbable heroes may not be found in all of Westeros, great destinies lay ahead for these two . . . as do powerful foes, royal intrigue, and outrageous exploits. Featuring more than 160 all-new illustrations by Gary Gianni, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a must-have collection that proves chivalry isn’t dead—yet.

Upping His Game
Revisado: 10-14-15
I've enjoyed all of Jorge's novels, but honestly the prose and pacing of these stories blows GoTs out of the water. It seems as though writing just one character is his sweet spot.
Furthermore, I must say I like that the story is about a good knight, who, in his simplicity is a better man than any in GoTs.
Must read.
