Historia
In this atmospheric and profoundly moving debut, Cathy and Daniel live with their father, John, in the remote woods of Yorkshire, in a house the three of them built themselves. John is a gentle brute of a man, a former enforcer who fights for money when he has to, but who otherwise just wants to be left alone to raise his children. When a local landowner shows up on their doorstep, their precarious existence is threatened, and a series of actions is set in motion that can only end in violence.

Haunting
Revisado: 12-26-24
This is an odd, haunting story that left me wondering about so many ineffable questions. The narration as well as the story's protagonist / narrator were compelling even though I always wanted to know more. I don't know if this story is for everyone, but it certainly left me pondering pockets of society outside of society. If you can live in the grey area and with never being fully satisfied (that's part the novel's appeal) then it's for you.

Historia
In a tale inspired by real events, pregnant journalist Joan Harken is cautiously excited to follow her fiancé back to his Minnesota hometown. After spending a childhood on the move and chasing the screams and swirls of news-rich city life, she’s eager to settle down. Lilydale’s motto, “Come Home Forever,” couldn’t be more inviting. And yet, something is off in the picture-perfect village. The friendliness borders on intrusive. Joan can’t shake the feeling that every move she makes is being tracked. An archaic organization still seems to hold the town in thrall.

It's like Get Out meets the Stepford Wives with racial purity thrown in. None of the twist and turns were particularly surprising. The main question was would she stay or go. I don't recommend this book. Listen to Gone Girl instead.

Audible presents an original dramatisation of Charles Dickens' Dombey and Son, first published as Dealings with the Firm of Dombey and Son: Wholesale, Retail and for Exportation. A literary masterpiece in which Dickens' gift for vivid characterisation is at its best, this is the story of a powerful man whose inability to appreciate those around him leads to his lonely demise and, later, his possible redemption.

moving story, incredible narrator
Revisado: 12-15-24
The narrator is outstanding. He's a true voice actor and really brings this excellent story to life. I've read and listened to many Dickens novels, and this is among my favorites now. The irony of title alone is remarkable. The story has such a range of characters, especially women characters. I admire Dickens' commentary on the social conditions that drive the lives of people with reduced legal and economic rights in Victorian England. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and the narration.

Heavy-Handed
Revisado: 08-06-24
This is a pretty didactic retelling of the Judeo-Christian story. There are odd inconsistencies that undermine the world-building. The narrator over enunciates, which I found annoying. Overall it was tedious, but I finished it because I tend to finish novels that I start.

Historia
Hailed as Charlotte Brontë’s “finest novel” by Virginia Woolf, Villette is the timeless semi-autobiographical tale of Lucy Snowe. Left with no family and no money, Lucy goes against her own timid nature and travels to the small city of Villette, France, where she becomes a school teacher in Madame Beck’s school for girls. During her stay, she falls in love—twice—and discovers an independent, inner strength rarely seen in women of her time.

Horrible narrator
Revisado: 07-19-24
This is a long, digressive Victorian novel that takes real interest to get into and enjoy. This narrator made it painful with her horrible, sanctimonious intonation. It was so bad that several chapters in, I spent a credit on a much better version with an excellent narrator who didn't make Lucy Snowe sound like an insufferable prig.

So when rumors of an assassination plot begin to circulate, she’s immediately assigned to the case. But she’s not working alone.

not as good as the first two

The story doesn't have quite the same spark as the other two, but it's still a fun listen. I love this narrator. I also very much enjoyed the ending.

I cannot express how impressed I with every aspect of this book. The narrator is also incredible. If you're familiar with Mark Twain's Huck Finn, you'll enjoy that much more.

Cecilia Bassingwaite is the ideal Victorian lady. She's also a thief. Like the other members of the Wisteria Society crime sorority, she flies around England drinking tea, blackmailing friends, and acquiring treasure by interesting means. Sure, she has a dark and traumatic past and an overbearing aunt, but all things considered, it's a pleasant existence. Until the men show up.

Good Story. Horrible Narrator
Revisado: 06-24-24
It was an unpredictable story, in a good way. Three plot was enjoyable, but the narrator was awful. Such over enunciation and melodramatic intonation. It's a shame that he narrates all this author's books because I don't know if I could deal with another one by him. He read the same way as he read the last Turton novel I listened to.

Fun and Informative
Revisado: 06-03-24
I wish I had heard the author's afterword first because I was confused about the period for a while. I really enjoyed hearing about an aspect of American history that's been overlooked for far too long and in a fun story. I liked how she handled the relationships between the women characters in the book. The ending took me by total surprise! The narrator has an odd inflection that makes it hard to tell that the sentence hasn't yet ended and that was distracting. Still, it was an uplifting story.
